Joseph Nechvatal

Dr. Joseph Nechvatal has worked with ubiquitous electronic visual information and computer-robotics since 1986. His computer-robotic assisted paintings and computer animations are shown regularly in galleries and museums throughout the world.

From 1991-3 he worked as artist-in-resident at the Louis Pasteur Atelier and the Saline Royale / Ledoux Foundation's computer lab in Arbois, France on 'The Computer Virus Project': an experiment with computer viruses as a creative stratagem.

Dr. Nechvatal has exhibited his work widely in Europe and the United States, both in private and public venues. He is collected by the Los Angeles County Museum, the Moderna Musset in Stockholm, Sweden and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Dr. Nechvatal's work was included in Documenta 8.

Dr. Nechvatal earned his Ph.D. in the philosophy of art and new technology as a Ph.D. doctoral fellow researcher with The Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts (CAiiA) (see: https://www.eyewithwings.net/nechvatal/ideals.htm). He served as Parisian editor for "RHIZOME INTERNET" (www.rhizome.org) between the years 1996-2001 and now writes regularly for "The THING' (www.thing.net), "NY Arts Magazine (www.nyartsmagazine.com) and "Zing Magazine". Dr. Nechvatal presently teaches 'Theories of Virtual Reality' at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

He is a founder of the Tellus Audio Art Project and served as conference coordinator for the 1st International CAiiA Research Conference entitled "CONSCIOUSNESS REFRAMED: Art and Consciousness in the Post-Biological Era" (5 & 6 July 1997); an international conference which looked at new developments in art, science, technology and consciousness which was held at the Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts, University of Wales College, Newport, UK. http://www.nechvatal.net/

    Ralph Hocking outlines his move from pottery and sculpture to photography, video and computer-based image work; he acquired a Paik/Abe synthesizer in 1972 and, with Sherleen Miller, produced multi-camera pieces (1971–1978) using mixing, reversal, rate switching and voltage control. With David Jones he developed a twenty-six-command program to manipulate frames and produce 256×256 black-and-white dot-matrix prints. He taught video art at SUNY Binghamton for thirteen years and founded and directed the Experimental Television Center Ltd. in Owego; entry appears in the Generic Real-time Interactive Digital catalog, Arnot Art Museum, July 12–September 28, 1986, curated by Peter Chamberlain.

    Cybernetic Serendipity: The Computer and the Arts was exhibited at The Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the exhibition was organized at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London. The American showing was augmented by works selected by James Harithas and included video work by Nam June Paik. The exhibition traveled to the Palace of Art and Science in San Francisco; the director of the exhibition was Jasia Reichardt.

  • Siggraph '83 Chronology

    Siggraph '83 Exhibition of Computer Art was held at the Isetan Museum of Art August 4–16, 1983 and traveled to sites throughout the US between July 1983 and May 1984; still prints in the exhibition were by Ralph Hocking, Walter Wright, Barbara Buckner, Connie Coleman and Alan Powell, and Tom DeWitt. The exhibition travelled to venues in France (Maison Cinema, Grenoble; Maison Culture, Chalonssuraone; Ministry of Culture, Paris; La Chartreuse Villeneuve, Lez Avignon; The American Center, Paris), Italy (City Council, Florence), Japan (Isetan Museum, Tokyo; Isetan Museum, Shizuoka; Marui Imai Museum, Hokkaido) and the USA (Flint Institute, Detroit); a videotape by Tom DeWitt and Vebeke Sorenson was produced at the Image Processing Lab at Renssalear Polytechnic Institute, Troy, and Harland Snodgrass was technical consultant on the exhibition.

    Electronic Visions, curated by John Minkowsky for the Hudson River Museum, presented installations by visual artists working with video and computer technologies. The exhibition included Steina Vasulka (Machine Vision, video as a perceptual system); Ralph Hocking and Sherry Miller Hocking (Nudes, a series of drawings realized on a homebuilt computer drawing system); Woody Vasulka (Images from the Vasulka Image Articulator); Gary Hill (Glass Onion, a multi-layered installation, and Happenstance, a videotape exploring the interaction of synthesizer imagery and language); and Dan Sandin (computer-produced holograms).
