JP Olsen

JP Olsen is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker who has worked in documentary film since 1998 on films and television segments that have aired on PBS, CBS, The Discovery Channel and A&E.

The Narcotics Farm is his first full-length documentary feature. The Narcotics Farm has received funding from The New York State Council on the Arts, the Fund For Investigative Journalism, The Jerome Foundation and the Experimental Television Center.

    The New York State Council on the Arts Media Program, directed by Dai Sil Kim-Gibson, reported fiscal year 1985–86 awards totaling $1,380,000 to 107 organizations for 160 projects, including 40 production and 3 media-collaboration awards; production funding was $360,000 (26% of the allocation).   • Envision Television: Charting the Cultural Geography of Homelessness Groups

    Envision Television (e-TV) was a DCTV-run media literacy and video production scholarship funded by the Soros Foundation's Open Society Institute that trained 40 young people living in temporary housing at Brooklyn's Amboy Neighborhood Center and the HELP center in the Bronx; DCTV instructors taught scriptwriting, camera operation, interviewing and computer-assisted non-linear editing and provided digital cameras, lights, microphones and access to a Cyberstudio. Trainees produced PSAs screened on 29 June 2000 and documentaries including Straight from the Hood that document homelessness, gang culture and the criminalization of the homeless; instruction was provided by Renata Gangemi and Orlando Richards.

She teaches experimental video and software; as Eyebeam Director of Production she founded and managed a cooperative studio supporting socially based media and also worked at the MTV Digital Television Lab on special effects and animation. She produced documentaries in Nepal, India and the US on women trafficking and HIV/AIDS along trucking routes in South Asia; she holds a BA from Brown and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and has received fellowships and commissions including Art in General and Harvestworks.

  • Ken Jacobs People

    Ken Jacobs, born Brooklyn, NY in 1933, served two years in the Coast Guard and used the GI Bill to study painting and film; he studied painting with Hans Hofmann in 1956–57. He created and directed The Millennium Film Workshop, NYC (1966–68), founded the Dept. of Cinema at SUNY Binghamton in 1969 and held the Professor of Cinema (1974–2000), Distinguished Professor (2000) and Emeritus (2002) titles. His grants and awards include D.A.A.D. 1986; Maya Deren Award 1994; Guggenheim and NEA 1995; Rockefeller Foundation and numerous NYFA, NYSCA and festival prizes 1999–2010; Tom, Tom, The Piper's Son was named to the National Film Registry on Dec. 27, 2007.
