A native of New York City, Jud Yalkut attended the High School of Music and Art until 1953, going on to attend the City College of New York and McGill University in Montreal through 1956. He began filmmaking in 1961, working in regular 8mm, began production in 16mm in 1964, and became the filmmaker member of the pioneer multi-media group USCO in New York State in 1965. Later that same year he began an ongoing collaboration with Nam June Paik, producing many video-films and later films for use in Paik's broadcast experiments. Beginning in 1966, he was an early member of the New American Filmmakers Group and the New York Filmmakers Cooperative. Yalkut began work directly in the video medium in 1968 with Raindance Corporation and was one of the first artists to produce work at the WNET-TV Television Laboratory in New york, starting in 1972. He taught film for five years at New York's School of Visual Arts, at the Millenium Film Workshop, film and video from 1972-73 at the City University of New York in Queens, and video at New York University. A Dayton, Ohio resident since 1973, Yalkut has been an Assistant Professor at Wright State University through 1977, and later taught at Xavier University in Cincinnati, and was Artist-In-Residence at Sinclair Community College in Dayton. He is a five-time recipient of Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council (four in media arts, and one in criticism), a Professional Filmmaking Grant in 1974 and two Artist's Project Grants in 1996 and 1998 (for video installation and video production) from the OAC. He received a Writing-In-Media grant through the auspices of the Experimental Television Center from the New York State Council on the Arts to complete his historic manuscript "Electronic Zen: The Alternate Video Generation," a personal history with interviews of the major figures in the beginnings of Video Art. His film and video works have been shown at such venues as the Whitney Museum of American Art, a Museum of Modern Art "Cineprobe" (NYC), a mini-retrospective at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and numerous other shows and festivals nationally and internationally.
