Julian Bleecker

Bleecker has long been involved in technology design, both the development work involved in building mobile and networked systems, and in his work to produce provocative human-machine entanglements. PDPal, a collaboration with Marina Zurkow and Scott Paterson, is a psychogeography mapping project for the web and Palmô PDA devices that allows maps to be created and shared based on experiential coordinates rather than the conventional coordinates of latitude/longitude and street addresses. It is installed in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center, and in Times Square in New York City.

He is an Engineer-in-Residence at Eyebeam Atelier, where he is producing a toolkit of WiFi technology specifically designed for art-technology projects. He is also a professional technology consultant, providing expertise in implementation and concept development for networked, wireless, and mobile systems for MTV and VH1. He is on the faculty of the Design and Technology Department at Parsons School of Design and writes and lectures on technology and culture.

The author links chip miniaturization, compression, programmable chips and the decline of solderable components to information hiding and surveillance; the text addresses cultural manifestations in television and consumption and frames video and computer animation as tools to simulate and critique mass-media and military structures, noting distribution via web pages and live webcasts.

  • An Interview with Peer Bode Interview

    Peer Bode began producing video around 1971 with an early black-and-white portapak while an undergraduate at SUNY Binghamton; he worked with filmmakers Larry Gottheim and Ken Jacobs and used the Experimental TV Center's keyers, mixers and colorizers. Remaining in Binghamton through the mid-1970s, he collaborated with the American Dance Asylum and with engineers and artists Ralph Hocking, Nam June Paik, Shuya Abe, David Jones and Walter Wright on tools such as the Paik-Abe Colorizer/Synthesizer, SEGs, Scan-A-Mate, a Spatial and Intensity Digitizer and an Elf II computer.

    Patrick Lichty (US) is a technologically-based conceptual artist, writer, independent curator, animator for the activist group The Yes Men, and Executive Editor of Intelligent Agent Magazine; he began showing technological media art in 1989 and explores the social relations between us and media. His solo and collaborative works have appeared at the Whitney & Turin Biennials, Maribor Triennial, Performa Performance Biennial, Ars Electronica and the International Symposium on the Electronic Arts (ISEA); he works extensively with virtual worlds including Second Life and his work with the performance art group Second Front has been featured in Flash Art, Eikon Milan and ArtNews. He is Assistant Professor of Interactive Arts & Media at Columbia College Chicago and resides in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

    Evan Roth is a media maker focused on technology in popular culture and the urban environment; he received an MFA from Parsons and teaches courses there on visual programming and Geek Graffiti. He is a senior fellow at the Eyebeam OpenLab, an open source creative technology research and development lab for the public domain. He lives in Brooklyn with his girlfriend and cat and lists www.ni9e.com and www.graffitiresearchlab.com; he reports spending his free time violating laws related to copyright and vandalism.

  • Judson Wright People

    Judson Wright is a visual artist and programmer who produced interactive and web-based artworks for over ten years; his practice integrates neurology, linguistics and child development with choreography, musical composition and illustration. His projects include the Shadow Casters collective at the Kitchen (New York), commissions and entries for cTheory and Rhizome ArtBase, the Animal Magnetism performances with Mabou Mines under circus tents in Poland and the Czech Republic, and repeated camera-tracking commissions for Philippa Kaye Company. He held residencies and fellowships at MacDowell, Yaddo, the Atlantic Center for the Arts and the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU; his work appears on CD-ROMs and in books and received support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
