Kai Beverly-Whittemore

Born in 1983, Kai Beverly-Whittemore began posing for photographer Jock Sturges as a child. Body of Work (2010), which chronicles her transition from subject to filmmaker, is Beverly-Whittemore's first feature and was invited to the 2007 ifp Documentary Rough Cut Lab and ifp's 2008 Independent Film Week. She was recently awarded a place in the prestigious 2010 AFI Directing Workshop for Women. Her shorts, Elsa Over Head (2004) and Unfixed (2005) screened at DocFilms and the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, respectively.

Her short screenplay, Half a Stop was awarded honorable mention from Killer Films/Massify.com in June 2009. In her spare time Kai may be found making miniature robots, playing with her nephew, or learning how to fiddle. She works as a freelance filmmaker and production designer from her home studio in Brooklyn.

    Doris Chase, a Seattle native who studied architecture at the University of Washington, pioneered video as a moving-image art form beginning in the 1970s; her sculptural installations and video work have been exhibited internationally and she has lectured widely. The book Artist in Motion by Patricia Failing (foreword by Ann-Sargent Wooster) and a tape by Tim Lorange document her career. Chase produced series including By Herself and Concepts, created Video Dance and the video journal The Chelsea, and installed public sculptures in Seattle.

  • Kristin Lucas People

    Kristin Lucas is a Brooklyn-based artist working with video/installation, performance and the world wide web; her work addresses automation and the psychological effects of rapid spread technology. Born 1968 in Davenport, Iowa, she holds a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union (1994) and has exhibited internationally since 1996 at venues including The New Museum, Postmasters, ICA Philadelphia, ZKM and the Guggenhiem and at festivals such as ISEA and VIPER. She has received grants and awards including the Colbert Foundation Award (2002, 2001), Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant (1998) and Andrea Frank Foundation Grant (1999); she held residencies at P.S.1 National Studio Program and The Experimental Television Center and has video distribution through Electronic Arts Intermix and VTape.

  • Melanie Crean People

    Melanie Crean is a media artist, teacher, curator and producer in Brooklyn. She teaches experimental video and software; as Eyebeam Director of Production she founded and managed a cooperative studio supporting socially based media and also worked at the MTV Digital Television Lab on special effects and animation. She produced documentaries in Nepal, India and the US on women trafficking and HIV/AIDS along trucking routes in South Asia; she holds a BA from Brown and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and has received fellowships and commissions including Art in General and Harvestworks.

  • Katie Halper People

    Katie Halper is a New York City comedian, documentary filmmaker, and activist; she graduated from Wesleyan University in 2003 and worked as development director for DCTV while coordinating living-wage and labor campaigns in NYC and Florida. She was associate producer of Estela Bravo's Free to Fly and co-produced Tim Robbins' Embedded; she served as outreach director for Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis's The Take. Her documentary La Memoria es Vaga screened at film festivals in Spain and the U.S.; she performs comedy in the city and hosts the monthly show Red Diaper Baby Presents.
