Karolina Sobecka

Poland native Karolina Sobecka works with interactivity, physical computing, video, animation, and other media. Her artistic interest is stimulated by advances in science and technology, and their repercussions in popular culture. She is interested in creating work that has meaning outside of art context and work that engages public space. Sobecka received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from Calarts in Experimental Animation/Integrated Media.

She has also studied and taught in the University of Washington's Digital Arts and Experimental Media PhD program. Sobecka's work has been shown at festivals and galleries around the world, including ISEA, Interactivos, Trampoline Radiator Festival, New Forms Festival, FILE - Electronic Language International Festival, and New Media Meeting. She has received awards from the Creative Capital, Princess Grace Foundation, the Platform International Animation Festival, and the Japan Media Arts Festival.

    Natalie Bookchin has created online projects since 1997; she collaborated with political theorist Jackie Stevens to initiate and develop the first phase of agoraXchange, an online collaboration to imagine and build a massive multiplayer online game presenting a political alternative. She is known internationally for online art work including Metapet, a parody of capitalist productivity in which the player must maximize profit margin without alienating the Metapet worker; she received a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited worldwide at PS1, Mass MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, KunstWerke Berlin, the Generali Foundation Vienna, the Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Shedhale in Zurich.

  • Sawako Kato People

    Sawako, originally born in Nagoya, Japan, is a timeline-based artist and sound sculptor based in Brooklyn, USA; her work treats everyday memories as digitally textured sound and visual material. She has four solo CD releases on 12k, and/OAR and Anticipate, and has collaborated with artists including Taylor Deupree, Andrew Deutsch, Kenneth Kirschner, Taku Sugimoto, Toshimaru Nakamura, Chika, O.blaat, Ryan Francesconi and Jacob Kirkegaard; she has performed at venues and festivals such as Harvestworks, Tonic, Issue Project Room, Roulette, Send + Receive, MUTEK, UCLA Hammer Museum and ICA London.   • Kathleen Ruiz People

    Kathleen Ruiz is a media artist and Associate Professor of Integrated Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute who creates simulations, games, sculpture and photography; her work investigates perception, behavior, interaction, simulation, perspective and empathy. She holds a Master of Arts from New York University and is a doctoral candidate (abd) at the European Graduate School. She has received awards and commissions from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and New York City and State arts agencies; her work was sponsored by Sony Computer Entertainment in Europe and has been exhibited and reviewed internationally.

  • Suzanne Goldenberg People

    Suzanne Goldenberg holds a BA from Mc Gill University and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art; she is presently working on the production and design for a quarterly online contemporary arts journal and at Harvestworks. Her exhibitions have included the Great Hall of Art (NY), Kibla Media Center (Slovenia), Gallery Remont (Yugoslovia), MaMa Media Center (Croatia), Jeleni Gallery (Czech Republic) and galleries in NY and Baltimore. She received a Gottleib Foundation Artist Grant (2003) and support from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (2003).

  • Nadia Hironaka People

    Nadia Hironaka holds an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999) and a BFA from The University of the Arts (1997); her video and film work has been exhibited and screened at venues and festivals including the 14th Philadelphia Film Festival (April 7–20, 2005), Rencontres internationales Paris/Berlin (2004) and Surface Tension at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (2003). She received awards and support including a 2004 Director's Choice at Black Maria, SOS and Leeway Foundation grants, and was Artist in Residence at FABRICA (2001). She has worked as Video Archivist at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (2000–present), taught video workshops and delivered lectures and juries.
