Katie Salen

Katie Salen is a game designer and Director of the graduate Design and Technology program at Parsons School of Design. She has done game design work for clients such as Microsoft, SIGGRAPH, the Hewlett Foundation, XMediaLab, the Design Institute, gameLab, and mememe Productions. Co-author (with Eric Zimmerman) of Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals (MIT Press 2004), as well as the forthcoming Rules of Play Reader (MIT Press 2005), she is also member of Playground, design team focused on large-scale, experimental, real-world games and a former core-team member of gameLab.

Katie recently partnered with screenwriter and director Hampton Fancher (Minus Man; Bladerunner) on a project for the XEN division of Microsoft to develop an animated storytelling experience distributed through Xbox Live, and has helped curate programs at the Lincoln Center, Cinematexas, ZKM, Exploding Cinema, and the Walker Art Center on machinima, the practice of creating animated films using game engines. She has lectured and published extensively on game design and game culture both nationally and internationally.

She holds a Master of Arts from New York University and is a doctoral candidate (abd) at the European Graduate School. She has received awards and commissions from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and New York City and State arts agencies; her work was sponsored by Sony Computer Entertainment in Europe and has been exhibited and reviewed internationally.

    Joshua Rosenstock holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA from Brown University; he is Assistant Professor of Interactive Media and Game Design at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.   • Stephanie Rothenberg People

    Stephanie Rothenberg works in performance, video and net-based media to create interactive situations that question relationships among individuals, identities, lifestyles and public spaces; she references corporate models and merges advertising and market-research formats with participatory role-playing and fantasy. Her work has been exhibited in the US and abroad, including ISEA 2004 (Helsinki) and venues in New York City, Montreal, Bremen, Chicago and North Adams, Massachusetts; she commutes between New York City and Buffalo, is Assistant Professor of Communication Design at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

  • Michael Mateas People

    Michael Mateas is an artist and assistant professor at Georgia Tech whose work synthesizes art practice, game design and Artificial Intelligence; he focuses on autonomous believable characters, story-generation and guidance architectures, and perception and expressive control for robotic art. His projects include Terminal Time, a mass-audience interactive story-generation machine (with Steffi Domike and Paul Vanouse), Office Plant #1, a desktop robotic plant responsive to email (with Michael Böhlen), and the interactive drama Facade (with Andrew Stern). He holds a PhD in Computer Science from CMU and has exhibited and presented internationally at venues including SIGGRAPH, the New York Digital Salon, AAAI, the Carnegie Museum, the Warhol Museum, and Sonic Circuits.
