Kevin Cunningham

Kevin Cunningham is a writer, director, designer, producer, inventor and entrepreneur based in New York City. He is the founder and Executive Artistic Director of 3-Legged Dog and led the company's recovery from its destruction in the 9/11/01 attacks and construction, fundraising and development of the 3LD Art & Technology Center, the company's new home in Lower Manhattan. He is the author, designer and director of many multidisciplinary artworks.

3LD serves as a home for 3-Legged Dog and hosts approximately 500 artists a year for 6 week to 3 month residencies focusing on large scale, complex experimental art of all kinds. Since 1994 Cunningham has focused on the creation of large scale, live, multimedia performance/installation works and on the development of intuitive technology for multiplexing and seamless interaction. Works include: House of Bugs (Ontological Theater), The Realism of Simple Machines, (La Mama), Automatic Earth (Signature Theater) and Kampuchea/Loisaida, (3LD Desbrosses Street), Accidental Records (Venice Biennale, 9th Annual Architecture Exhibit) Degeneracy, Losing Something and A Line of You at 3LD Art & Technology Center.

He is currently designing and directing 3-Legged Dog's multi-media performance/installation of Chuck Mee's Fire Island which opens in April of 2008 and completing work on a series of multi-layered interactive 3D video installations using the new Eyeliner 3D video projection technology. Over the last 25 years he has worked continuously as a writer, designer, director, artistic director, curator, or producer for visual art, theater, film, and media artists and companies in New York, Europe and elsewhere. Awards and honors include the 2007 American Theater Wing Hewes Design Award for Production Design of Losing Something, residencies at the Edward Albee Foundation's Barn and Bellagio and numerous grants and awards.

    Ken Kobland was born in the Bronx and studied architecture, art and philosophy; he graduated in Art with a minor in Philosophy from Union College, Schenectady, New York in 1969 and attended Columbia University School of Architecture in 1967-68.   • Kathy Rae Huffman People

    Kathy Rae Huffman is Director of Visual Arts at Cornerhouse, Manchester; from June 2000 to May 2002 she directed Hull Time Based Arts and the ROOT festival. From 1998 to 2000 she was Associate Professor of Electronic Art and director of EMAC at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, researching female environments on the Internet, 3D online environments and telepresence. She curated new media exhibitions at Cornerhouse including Grace Weir A Fine Line and Lab3D, co-organized Web3Dart (from 1999), co-initiated the FACES network and collaborated with Eva Wohlgemuth on FACE SETTINGS and SIBERIAN DEAL; earlier curatorial posts include WGBH/ICA, The ICA and Long Beach Museum of Art.

    Judson Wright is a visual artist and programmer who produced interactive and web-based artworks for over ten years; his practice integrates neurology, linguistics and child development with choreography, musical composition and illustration. His projects include the Shadow Casters collective at the Kitchen (New York), commissions and entries for cTheory and Rhizome ArtBase, the Animal Magnetism performances with Mabou Mines under circus tents in Poland and the Czech Republic, and repeated camera-tracking commissions for Philippa Kaye Company. He held residencies and fellowships at MacDowell, Yaddo, the Atlantic Center for the Arts and the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU; his work appears on CD-ROMs and in books and received support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

    Alan Sondheim (born Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania) is a new-media artist, writer and theorist based in Brooklyn with B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from Brown University. His books include Being on Line: Net Subjectivity, Disorders of the Real and .echo, and his films and videos have screened internationally, including Millennium Film, New York (2008) and Brown's Interrupt Festival (2008). He co-moderates the email lists Cybermind, Cyberculture and Wryting, edited a 2001 American Book Review issue on Codework and was Trace Virtual Writer (1999). He has held residencies at Odyssey/Second Life and West Virginia University (2004, 2006) and conducts NSF-funded research at WVU on codework, avatars and virtual environments.

  • Thoughts on 3-D Tools

    Tom DeWitt recounts a career in 3-D imagery beginning in 1976 with Vibeke Sorensen on the stereo-pair video Hot Wax (transferred to film and shown at Anthology, 1978) and the creation of auto-stereoscopic parallax-barrier stereograms exhibited at SUNY Albany; he received a Guggenheim grant, discovered in 1984 a diffraction phenomenon enabling 3-D recording without two cameras, obtained a patent and later an NSF grant to study it. He worked at RPI under the student radio station and in the School of Humanities and Engineering, programmed particle systems in the Image Processing Lab through 1987, produced laser light shows, taught at Dutchess Community College using Amigas, and contributed Pulfrich 3-D computer graphics for Gerry Marks on a 1990 Rolling Stones project that used an Aspex PIPE for image processing.
