The Kitchen Center for Video and Music was founded in 1971 by Woody and Steina Vasulka and relocated in 1973 from the Broadway Central Hotel kitchen to a Broome Street loft. Initially funded through Howard Wise and Electronic Arts Intermix, it became the non-profit Haleakala, Inc. under Robert Stearns and shifted from funding experiments to presenting electronic music and video works. It has shown tapes and performances by artists including Juan Downey, operates a video room for 1/2- and 3/4-inch tapes, publishes a monthly calendar and catalog, and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
