laura Kissel

Laura Kissel is a media artist who works in film and the electronic and digital arts. She is cofounder of the Orphan Film Symposium at the University of South Carolina, where she is an associate professor of media arts. Kissel's documentary work explores social and political issues surrounding landscape and land use, the representation of place and history, and the use of orphan films.

She is currently in the preproduction stage of a documentary about media representations of disability, eugenics, and the struggle for disability civil rights. Kissel is a 1991 graduate of Ithaca College's Department of Cinema and Photography.

    Leah Gilliam (b. 1967, Washington, DC) is a video and new-media artist and Associate Professor of Film and Electronic Arts at Bard College. She studied at Brown (B.A.) and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (M.F.A.) and presented her first solo museum exhibition, Agenda for a Landscape, at the New Museum in 2002. Her video Apeshit was named one of Film Comment's Best of 1999 and Sapphire and the Slave Girl won the New Visions Video Award; her projects received funding from Creative Capital and New York State Council on the Arts.

    Branda Miller is a video artist, educator and media activist who teaches at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as Associate Professor in Video Art and Media Literacy and co-founded The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY. Her media works have screened and been broadcast internationally and have been used in community organizing and education; she received grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the NEA, the Andy Warhol Foundation and others. She authored the interactive project Witness to the Future (CD-ROM, Voyager), which combined a video documentary, Silent Spring by Rachael Carson, over 500 up-datable website links and curricula.

    Jody Lafond is a video artist and independent producer whose internationally exhibited experimental videos and activist documentaries have shown at Art in General, the New York Video Festival and the Images Video Festival; she received a NYSCA Media Grant (2001) and NYFA Video Fellowships (1988, 1992). She has produced documentaries and community media since 1989 with groups including 8 mm News Collective and Media Coalition for Reproductive Rights, taught filmmaking at University of Oklahoma (Visiting Assistant Professor, 1987–1988) and University at Buffalo (Teaching Assistant, 1984–1986), and held a Visual Studies Workshop ARE residency (1996) and Experimental Television Center finishing funds (1992, 1995, 1997).
