Lauren Cornell

As Executive Director of Rhizome, Lauren Cornell oversees and develops the organization's programs all of which serve to promote and contextualize new media art. Before starting with Rhizome in May 2005, Cornell worked as curator, writer and arts administrator in New York. She worked in the Andy Warhol Film Project at the Whitney Museum, and from 2002-2004, she served as Executive Director of Ocularis, an organization dedicated to artists' film and video.

Cornell also worked as a youth media educator and organizer at various schools and community centers around New York. Her writing on contemporary art, experimental film and new media has been published in a range of international publications and online art resources. She has curated screenings, exhibitions or performances at venues including The Kitchen, Andrew Kreps Gallery, Foxy Production, Participant Inc, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, The Institute of Contemporary Art in London and the Contemporary Center for Art in Warsaw.

Lauren Cornell is Executive Director of Rhizome and oversees the organization's programs to promote and contextualize new media art. She started with Rhizome in May 2005.     Nicholas Economos is an artist and educator in rural Western New York whose practice includes interactive media, sound, video, animation and prints. He is Site Editor for Rhizome.org at The New Museum of Contemporary Art in NYC, edits the Rhizome web site and Rhizome Rare email list, and received an Individual Artist Project Grant from New York State Council on the Arts. He has exhibited at numerous venues, was a frequent artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center in Owego, New York, and is a visiting professor in the Department of Expanded Media at Alfred University.

  • Wayne Ashley People

    Wayne Ashley is an independent new media creator, curator, and consultant who was curator of new media for Thundergulch at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, organizing public programming on art and technology. He collaborated on House[raw], a three-year multidisciplinary online project, and curated an online exhibit for Nikelab.com. From 1999 to 2001 he was the first Manager of New Media at BAM, where he established the New Media Department and designed Arts in Multimedia (AIM) with Bell Labs; he produced and presented works and web documentaries, curated Under_score for BAM's Next Wave Down Under Festival 2001, and holds an MA and Ph.D. from New York University.

    Erik Moskowitz makes installations and films that examine the relationship between cinema space and gallery space; solo installation exhibitions at Momenta Art, Freight and Volume, Holiday (NYC) and Le Sous Salon (Paris); festival screenings at Impakt (Netherlands), Antimatter (Canada), Oberhausen (Germany), Experimenta (India), Press Play (Carnegie Mellon) and Experiments in Cinema (University of New Mexico); website http://www.americantrance.com/. Amanda Trager combines painting, sculpture and installation with first-person prose narrative; solo exhibitions at Momenta Art, Annika Sundvik (NYC), Clifford-Smith Gallery (Boston) and Le Sous Salon (Paris); group shows include Brooklyn Museum's Open House, NextNext Visual Art program at BAM, White Box gallery and Feature gallery (NYC); both live and work in NYC.

  • Greg Bordowitz People

    Greg Bordowitz is Associate Professor of Film, Video, and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; he studied at New York University, the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program (NY), and the School of Visual Arts (NY), and holds a concurrent faculty position at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. His exhibitions and screenings include The Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago), the New York Jewish Film Festival, PBS broadcast, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), the Sundance Film Festival, and the Whitney Biennial (NY); his awards include a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Jerome Foundation Grant, Art Matters Grant, New York State Council for the Arts Distribution Grant, Banff Centre for the Arts Residency, and Rockefeller Intercultural Film/Video Arts Fellowship.

  • Kevin McGarry People

    Kevin McGarry joined Rhizome after graduating from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts; at NYU he studied Film/Video production and Art History and held internships with Electronic Arts Intermix, the New York Underground Film Festival, and the Ocularis microcinema in Brooklyn. His interest in new media is linked to digital literacy and a stated affinity for role-playing, cartography, and atypical communities; he has taught video in New York and New Hampshire and produces his own work and collaborations on Sundays.
