Linda Gibson

Linda Gibson, Executive Director of Medial Alliance, has been an active member of the field as an arts administrator and artist. She has worked in distribution at California Newsreel as the Director of the African American Perspectives, promoting public uses of independent African American media. She has also served as Program Analyst at the New York State Council on the Arts, Electronic Media and Film Program, and was the Video Technical Director for Women's Interart Center.

She has taught in the Core Department of California College of Arts and Crafts, and served as Director of Media at Middlesex County College and Assistant Director of Media at Union County College. Gibson has also taught at several artist-in-the-schools programs including Creative Resources, the SAY! Project and the Digital Media Center's Tapestry Project. She was a founding member of X-Factor, the San Francisco-based experimental media consortium, and has organized numerous conferences and media festivals.

She has curated exhibitions for the San Francisco Cinemateque/Yerba Buena and the New Jersey Student Film and Video Festival, and the Living Room Festival sponsored by KQED-TV. Her most recent video work Last Tape (for my friends) premiered at the 1996 Flaherty Film Seminars.

    Media Alliance Annual Conference took place at The Kitchen, New York City, September 12-14, 1985; Robin White was Director of Media Alliance and Deirdre Boyle delivered the keynote. Programs included Arts Advocacy in New York with Arts Coalition of the Empire State and Alliance of NYS Arts Councils; Video Preservation in 1985 featured MOMA, Anthology Film Archives and CBS News Archive.     Linda Iannacone is an artist, video producer, activist and educator who taught video production, media literacy and visual arts to adults and youth through MNN, Educational Video Center, DCTV, Paper Tiger TV, Henry Street Settlement House and international programs in Vienna and at NGBK. With Paper Tiger TV she produced programs including Drawing the Line at Pittston (covering an 11 month coal miners strike), Staking a Claim in Cyberspace (on changing information technologies and media access), and Rock Paper, Missiles (a critique of U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine); she also produced the documentary AMOK!, about a radical gender bending circus traveling through New York City communities, and she states a belief in holistic activism employing art, music, voice and action toward social justice.

    Beyond Video: The Media Alliance Directory I traces the development of video art from the Sony portapak's U.S. arrival circa 1965 through the 1980s; it records early practitioners, guerrilla collectives and nonprofit centers including Young Filmakers/Video Arts (1968) and Global Village (1969). By 1972 at least nine New York organizations supported subsidized production, training and post-production, and academic workshops expanded in the 1970s. AIVF (1974) and ATN (1976) organized around cable and publishing; Anthology Film Archives received tape‑preservation funding in 1983 to transfer late‑1960s–early‑1970s tapes to 3/4" cassettes, and the 1980s brought broader exhibition venues.

  • Artists Videotape Distribution Service Bibliography

    Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) is a non-profit founded in 1971 to aid the advancement of video as an art form; it has sponsored many video projects and received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and private foundations. In 1974 EAI expanded operations to establish a videotape distribution service offering work by more than twenty artists and groups, with special arrangements to distribute programs created at WNET/13's Experimental Television job and at WGBH's New Television Workshop; a catalogue of available tapes will be issued later that year. Notable items listed include the broadcast The Medium is the Medium (Educational TV Network, March 1969) and six tableaux of Jean Dubuffet's CouCou Bazar videotaped at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in July 1973.

  • Media Alliance Chronology

    Meeting to formalize Media Alliance was held November 2–3, 1979 at Media Study/Buffalo; representatives from organizations including Donnell Film Library, Experimental Intermedia Foundation, Hallwalls, IMAC and The Kitchen attended; By Laws and a statement of purpose were drafted and distributed. The annual membership meeting was set for January 25, 1980 in New York City; agenda items included voting on the Board of Directors, discussion of funding for Media Alliance and a report from the Telecommunications Committee.
