    Mary Lucier’s Denman’s Col (Geometry) was shown at the Whitney Museum in November; the installation comprises two synchronous video channels displayed on five monitors mounted in a jagged sculptural framework evoking a city skyline, with screen sizes ranging from 12 in. to 21 in. The work juxtaposes urban architecture and drinking-glass interiors, including a central wine-glass shot reflecting buildings, and uses rotated and inverted screens so a two-channel presentation reads as five channels. Lucier incorporates a layered soundscape—police siren, clothesline squeak, church bells, rain, wind, pouring liquids and a spinning rim note—and the title references a family name and the term col, a pathway between mountains.

    Landscape: Mediated Views is an exhibition exploring landscape as a cultural construct and as mediated by imaging technologies; it cites Simon Schama and the 18th-century Claude glass and traces a shift from traditional painting to portable black-and-white video in the late 1960s and onward to contemporary digital technologies. The artists’ tapes document geographic, geological, cultural, narrative, interior and policy-related landscapes and consider how portability, camera and non-camera video processes, image processing and media systems alter representation, land use and perceptions over the nearly thirty-year history of the medium.

  • Landscape: Mediated Views Chronology

    Landscape: Mediated Views was an exhibition at Visual Studies Workshop held January 30–April 3, 1998; catalog texts were by Sherry Miller Hocking and administration was by Bob Doyle. The exhibition featured works by Jeffrey Lerer, Kristin Lucas, Peer Bode, Mary Lucier, John Orentlicher, Branda Miller, Mike Camoin, Dave Ryan, Steina, Barbara Buckner, Bill Viola, Philip Mallory Jones and Woody Vasulka. The project received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and Chase Manhattan Bank.
