Maria Marewski

Founding Director (in 1994) and Executive Director of the Children's Media Project, Maria Marewski is an award winning filmmaker who has taught at the University of Maryland, Hunter College, and Vassar College. She has presented at numerous national conferences (Grantmakers in the Arts, Coalition for Essential Schools, the National Media Education Conference) and has curated (since 1999) the Youth Media Program for The Hampton's International Film Festival. Maria has served as a panelist or presenter for numerous committees, conferences and film festivals.

She currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Poughkeepsie Institute, as well as our own Children's Media Project. As Executive Director, she is responsible for organization-wide leadership and direction, leading the Curriculum Development team, fund raising and general community outreach. www.childrensmediaproject.org.

  • Marie Nesthus People

    Marie Nesthus is Director of the Donnell Media Center at the New York Public Library and holds a doctorate in Cinema Studies from New York University; she has worked on distribution and exhibition of avant-garde and documentary films with a focus on preservation and exhibition. Under her leadership the Donnell Media Center became an archive and study center for independent film while continuing to circulate videos and other audiovisual materials to the public. She has served on the Film Advisory Committee of the American Federation of Art and on the boards of the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, the American Film Festival and the St. Petersburg (Russia) Non-fiction Film Festival; in June 2002 she received the LEO award for lifetime achievement at the Flaherty Film Seminar.

  • Nadia Hironaka People

    Nadia Hironaka holds an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999) and a BFA from The University of the Arts (1997); her video and film work has been exhibited and screened at venues and festivals including the 14th Philadelphia Film Festival (April 7–20, 2005), Rencontres internationales Paris/Berlin (2004) and Surface Tension at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (2003). She received awards and support including a 2004 Director's Choice at Black Maria, SOS and Leeway Foundation grants, and was Artist in Residence at FABRICA (2001). She has worked as Video Archivist at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (2000–present), taught video workshops and delivered lectures and juries.

  • Joanna Raczynska People

    Joanna Raczynska is a curator, writer and film/video maker who has made short non-fiction films and videos since 1997 and worked in arts administration for over a decade; she earned a Masters degree in Documentary by Practice with merit at the University of London, Royal Holloway College in 2001. She collaborated on projects and exhibitions with composer Will Redman and Termite TV; her work has been screened internationally and in the US, and since September 2002 she has been Media Arts Director at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY.

  • Nicole Betancourt People

    Nicole Betancourt is Executive Director of MediaRights.org; her first film, Before you go: A Daughter's Diary, premiered on HBO in 1996 and won an Emmy for Outstanding News and Documentary Individual Achievement, a Golden Spire at the San Francisco Int'l Film Festival, and two Cable Ace nominations. She produced the feature documentary 90 Miles about how relationships within a Cuban family are shaped by the U.S.–Cuba rift; she was Associate/Field Producer for the PBS series The Quiet Revolution and Producer/Director of the educational video Changing Course to aid survivors of Hurricane Mitch. She is a member of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers and serves on the board of New York Women in Film and Television.
