Marie Nesthus

Marie Nesthus is the Director of the Donnell Media Center at the New York Public Library. She holds a doctorate in Cinema Studies from New York University and has dedicated her work to the distribution and exhibition of avant-garde and documentary films, with a special interest in the preservation and exhibition of such works. Under her leadership, the Donnell Media Center has evolved into an important archive and study center for independent film, while continuing to circulate videos and other audiovisual materials to a wide public.

She has been active in many organizations in the film/video community (e.g., the Film Advisory Committee of the American Federation of Art, and the Board of Directors of the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, a public access television network, the American Film Festival, and the St. Petersburg [Russia] Non-fiction Film Festival). In June 2002, she was presented with the LEO award for lifetime achievement as a film librarian/programmer at the Flaherty Film Seminar.

Selected grants included $22,000 to Ed Bowes, $3,000 to Suzanne Frew, $3,500 to Amy Taubin, and a $20,000 minority-development award to Film News Now Foundation/Third World Newsreel; the Program also funded equipment and exhibitions, supported Channel Thirteen's New Television I and II, awarded Whitney Museum $10,000 for technology research, and listed staff and advisory, alternate and extended panelists.

    The New York State Council on the Arts Media Program (1987–88), directed by Dai Sil Kim-Gibson until February 1988 with Arthur Tsuchiya acting, administered a $1,570,000 allocation and earmarked over 25% ($400,897) for individual artists and independent documentary producers. The Program prioritized production and audience development for emerging, minority and upstate artists; it funded exhibitions, services, regrant programs and operating support with grants to Black Filmmaker Foundation, World Institute of Black Communications, Women Make Movies (Starrett City project) and Film News Now ($20,364). Exhibition, regrant and operating awards supported centers such as CEPA, Visual Studies Workshop, Experimental Television Center and Film/Video Arts and leveraged $54,500 in matching funds.

  • Center for Media Study at University of Buffalo: Activities (1977, 1986, 1998) Groups

    Chronology and program notes documenting activities around the Center for Media Study (CMS) at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the nonprofit Media Study/Buffalo, with citations to Pamela Susan Hawkins (1998), Marguerite W. Knowles (1996) and John Minkowsky (1977). Dr. Gerald O'Grady founded and directed CMS in 1972 and led initiatives including an Oral History of the Independent American Cinema and multiple conferences and summer institutes; CMS offered undergraduate and graduate coursework and degrees in media-making, history/theory and social effects of media, maintained extensive film and video facilities, and recorded over five hundred hours of filmmaker interviews.
