Marina Zurkow

Marina Zurkow is a multidisciplinary artist who works with character, icon, and narrative in several forms: animated works, interactive installations, and material objects.

In 2004, Zurkow completed a seven channel, multi-linear animated installation, "Nicking the Never," which was presented as a work-in-progress at The Kitchen in New York, and premiered at FACT in the U.K. in 2004.

Other recent projects include the award-winning animated episodic "Braingirl," that chronicles a mutant-cute girl who wears her insides on the outside; "PDPal," a mapping application/installation for screen, web and mobile devices that allows a user to "write her own city," in collaboration with architect Scott Paterson and technologist Julian Bleecker; and "Pussy Weevil, or How I Learned to Love the War," a vile, interactive, animated persona.

Zurkow's icons and characters have been incorporated into diverse projects, from animated films to hotel design, lightboxes and clothing. Zurkow's work has been exhibited at the Sundance Film Festival, the Rotterdam Film Festival, Ars Electronica, the Walker Art Center, the Brooklyn Museum, SFMoMA, Eyebeam Atelier, Totem Design and bitforms gallery, and broadcast on MTV and PBS. Zurkow was a 2003 Rockefeller New Media Fellow, and received grants in 2001-2002 from Creative Capital Foundation, the Jerome Foundation and the Walker Art Center.

She is an adjunct professor at Parsons School of Design in the MFA Design & Technology Department and at NYU's Interactive Technology Program. She received a 2007 Finishing Funds award from the Experimental Television Center. https://www.o-matic.com

    CAST was funded by the New York State Council on the Arts in 1970 to explore creative uses of video and exhibited at the Everson Museum in 1975; the Scalas were included in New Work in Abstract Video Imagery (1977) at the Everson. Community Video ran June 2–28, 1975 at the Everson Museum.     Kristin Lucas is a Brooklyn-based artist working with video/installation, performance and the world wide web; her work addresses automation and the psychological effects of rapid spread technology. Born 1968 in Davenport, Iowa, she holds a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union (1994) and has exhibited internationally since 1996 at venues including The New Museum, Postmasters, ICA Philadelphia, ZKM and the Guggenhiem and at festivals such as ISEA and VIPER. She has received grants and awards including the Colbert Foundation Award (2002, 2001), Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant (1998) and Andrea Frank Foundation Grant (1999); she held residencies at P.S.1 National Studio Program and The Experimental Television Center and has video distribution through Electronic Arts Intermix and VTape.

  • Zarah Cabanas People

    Zarah Cabanas is a Philippines-born, New York City-based video artist, live visualist (VJ) and musician (aka Lady Firefly); she worked as Video Editor/Artist at Blue Man Group and her work has appeared on the How To Be A Megastar Tour, DJ Tiesto's Elements of Life Tour and on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She creates live video performance compositions, pre-composed and edited video artworks, improvised and collaborative sets and multi-channel installations; support has been received from NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Experimental Television Center, New York University, Chashama and Knitting Factory.

  • Sharon Grace People

    Sharon Grace is an artist working in telecommunications, video installation, interactive digital systems and sculpture in stone and steel. She apprenticed with Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe at WGBH and WNET and helped build Video Synthesizers; in 1977 she was west-coast artist/project leader at NASA for SEND/RECEIVE, the first coast-to-coast interactive satellite artist network on the emerging Internet. She has received awards and grants, has exhibited nationally and internationally including the Venice Biennale and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and works at the San Francisco Art Institute.

  • Tina LaPorta People

    Tina LaPorta is a media artist who has created web-specific artwork since 1997; she was Artist-in-Residence at Ars Electronica's FutureLab (Linz, Austria), where she created the web-based video installation TRACES. TRACES was shown at SEAFAIR '98 (Macedonia) and VIDEOMEDEJA (Bosnia), and her net works appeared in ALT-X, Studio XX (Montreal) and the Leonardo Electronic Gallery (MIT). She was Artist-in-Residence at the Experimental Television Center (Owego, NY), completed the video Camera Work, produced the Manhattan Cable monthly show CyberFemme TV (1996–97) and earned an M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts.

  • Shana Moulton and Nick Hallett People

    Shana Moulton is a video and performance artist who creates oblique narratives that combine unsettling, wry humor with a low‑tech Pop sensibility; she performs a character whose interactions with the everyday become mundane and surreal. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley and received an MFA from Carnegie Mellon; she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and studied at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Her work has screened internationally at festivals and venues including Loop '05, Impakt, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen and The Armory Show; she lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
