Matt Adams

Matt Adams is a member of Blast Theory, one of the leading artists' groups in Britain making interactive performances, installations, video and mixed reality projects. Combining rigorous research and development with leading edge technologies, their practice ranges across media and disciplines, taking risks and encouraging critical debate. Their work confronts a media saturated world in which popular culture rules. It uses video and computers to ask questions about the ideologies present in the information that envelops us.

The work is a fast cutting collage of images and actions, often appropriated from elsewhere. Based in London since 1991, the group has a creative team of three. They have shown work in galleries, theatres, cinemas, universities and found spaces throughout Europe and beyond.

  • Walter Wright People

    Walter Wright began creating electronic images and sound at the University of Waterloo in 1966 and worked as a video artist, animator and software engineer at Computer Image Corp. and Dolphin Productions (operating a Scanimate); he collaborated with Ed Emshwiller on Thermogenisis and Scapemates and showed tapes regularly at the Kitchen where he was assistant director. As artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center, NY 1973-76 he pioneered video performance, toured with the Paik/Abe video synthesizer and joined a 1978 LSI-11 computer-to-video system project supported by the NEA. He is a member of Boston collective VideoSpace, co-founder of 911 Gallery, developed the Video Shredder and performed across the US east coast and Canada.

  • Adam Kendall People

    Adam Kendall is a New York City video artist and musician who composes audiovisual work and performs solo and with collaborators including Vortex. He has worked with Hellbender Film Projekt and served as video resident for Brooklyn events Dogs Blood Rising and The Wrecking Ball. His work has screened nationally and internationally at New York venues and festivals including Experimental Intermedia (NYC 2005). He co-curated {R}ake, founded F:T:H, has been included in The New York Times and Remix, lectured at Parsons M.F.A., and lives in Brooklyn, NY; www.hellbender.org.

  • Art Jones People

    Art Jones is an image/sound manipulator working with film, digital video and hybrid media; he produces films, videos, CD-ROMs, live audio/video mixes and installations that sample popular music and mainstream media culture to examine implicit meanings. He performs as a VJ and has collaborated with Soundlab, DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, DJ T-Ina, Amiri Baraka, Femmes with Fatal Breaks, Alec Empire and Phillip Virus; he is a current member of the ITEL Media group and a former member of the Not Channel Zero television collective. His work has been shown internationally in festivals, museums, bars, galleries and living rooms, and he lives and works in and between Chicago and New York; he is from the Bronx, New York.

    Alan Moore, an ex-artist turned scholar, describes his work in and with archives and notes that his personal archive includes a video distribution business. His dissertation traces politicized artists' organizations from the Art Workers Coalition through Art & Language, Artists Meeting for Cultural Change, Collaborative Projects, Political Art Documentation (PADD) and Group Material, spanning roughly 1969 to 1984. He discusses archival mortality, obsolete magnetic-media preservation and digital promises; he recounts a Syracuse experimental-video conference involving Ardele Lister and Ralph Hocking (Experimental TV Center) and references installations by Michael Smith and Josh White that invoke obsolete technologies.

  • Matthew Belanger People

    Matthew Belanger is an artist, developer, educator and curator based in New York City and the Northern Berkshires; his photography, digital imaging, interactive installations and net art commissions have been exhibited internationally and featured in publications including La VanGuardia, Boing Boing, The Boston Globe and The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. He is a lecturer at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where he teaches web development, and a co-founder of Greylock Arts, a non-commercial art space dedicated to interactive new media and emerging arts practice; website http://matthewbelanger.net.

  • Scott Draves People

    Scott Draves is a visual and software artist based in New York City and San Francisco; he created the Flame algorithm (1991), the Bomb instrument (1995) and Electric Sheep (1999), an evolving abstract animation with over 60,000 daily participants, and his open-source artworks are hosted on MoMA.org. He holds a BS in Mathematics from Brown (1990) and a PhD from Carnegie Mellon (1997) on metaprogramming for media processing.
