  • Media Ithaca: Description of Programs (1997, 1998) Groups

    Media Ithaca was formed after an Upstate Media Conference in Ithaca in spring 1987 and operated as a community forum to encourage independent media work; NYSCA supported a Coordinator for the Central New York Programmers Group and the office was housed at Ithaca College. The organization was initially a program of Cornell Cinema in 1988 and received support and services from Ithaca College School of Communications. In the early 1990s it awarded small grants (program begun 1991), organized a summer Film and Video Festival (begun 1990), hosted workshops including an Amiga workshop, and presented screenings and discussions by Cheryl Dunye, Craig Baldwin and Wilhelm Hein; leadership changes occurred in 1993–1994 and Media Ithaca was disbanded in 1994, with the Regrant program administered by Cornell Cinema.

    Video History: Making Connections examined three decades of independent video since the late 1960s and opened with Video Rewind, organized by Deirdre Boyle; panels included Paul Ryan, Barbara London (MOMA video curator) and Parry Teasdale, with screenings such as Proto Media Primer (1970) and Calligrams (1970). A concurrent Video Preservation meeting, involving Mona Jimenez and referencing MOMA’s 1991 preservation meeting, addressed cataloging, funding and technical support; David Ross delivered a keynote at Henriks Chapel on Net Art and video’s institutional absorption. Pamela Hawkins organized a Resource Room displaying early analog and digital recording and playback equipment, processors and period publications, and panels treated writing and teaching video history.
