Nancy Buchanan - CIA: School of Film/Video

Nancy Buchanan is a Los Angeles-based artist who teaches at CalArts in Valencia and has also worked in numerous formats and media. Nancy Buchanan has had her work shown in galleries and museums in the U.S. and Europe, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the New Museum in New York and Steirischer Herbst in Graz, Austria. She has received fellowship support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council and the city of Los Angeles. Recent productions include Developing: The Idea of Home, an interactive CD-ROM examining the theme of "home" and digital prints "updating" Southwestern landscapes.

In addition to producing video, she exhibits installations, pastels, drawings and performance. She also writes critical essays and curates art and video exhibits. Recent digital projects have included work about land development and the idea of home. She has also worked as a performance artist, done installations and many video projects, as well as drawings and paintings.

Buchanan is working on a larger project which involves the creation of textiles and other items used in home furnishings. The decorative patterns on couch, rug, wallpaper, etc. consist of graphs and charts depicting various aspects of contemporary economy, land use, development and so forth. For this project, Buchanan created a piece she calls "Sleep Secure," a patchwork quilt that the participant can construct by downloading the pattern.

Each slice of the pie-chart quilt piece would have links to more information about the percent of the national budget the slice represents. The participant can select the patterns on the piece by clicking on some portion of the Ïmother quiltÓ presented by the artist.     Kitty Hubbard holds a BA in studio art from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, and an MFA in Visual Studies from SUNY Brockport; she serves as a professor in the Art Department at the State University of New York College at Brockport. She began as a photographer and expanded her practice to digital media, installations, artist books and sculpture. She has participated in over 65 exhibitions nationally and internationally and has received numerous grants, including Artist Project Grants funded by the NEA, The Rockefeller Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

    Nancy Golden is an Instructor of Media at Baruch College; she has had recent exhibitions at Artists Space (New York City), The Knitting Factory (New York City), The Center for Photography at Woodstock, York College and the Chamot Gallery. Her works have been screened at Massachusetts College Gallery of Art, Chamot Gallery, the Jersey City Biennial, Irving Goldman Memorial Gallery and Art in Plain View.

    Jennifer Fieber is a native Californian who graduated from UC Berkeley and received an MFA from The San Francisco Art Institute; she lives in New York and works as a union projectionist. Her work has been shown at BAM Cinemateque; NY Int'l Film Festival; Museum f¸r Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt; Filmkunsthaus Babylohn, Berlin; Pacific Film Archives; Telluride Film Festival; and Onion City Film Festival. Her film practice often employs home-made chemicals, dyes and special re-photography devices.

  • Barbara Lattanzi People

    Barbara Lattanzi is an artist whose practice involves constructing and applying "cinema software"; she has written and applied digital code for projects including motion-picture riffing and improvisation (Unwriting), remediation of particular "structuralist" films of the 1970s (HF Critical Mass), reexamination of the sing-along as ideology critique (C-SPAN Karaoke), and perceptual experimentation with extended-duration moving-image structures (Optical De-dramatization Engine).   • Marita Sturken People

    Marita Sturken is Associate Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California, and author of Tangled Memories (California, 1997), Thelma & Louise (British Film Institute, 2000), Practices of Looking (with Lisa Cartwright, Oxford, 2001), and co-editor of Technological Visions (Temple, 2004). She holds a PhD from the History of Consciousness program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and has published in journals including Representations, Public Culture, History and Theory, and Afterimage. She has written extensively about video art and the emergence of video, including catalogues for the Museum of Modern Art and Electronic Arts Intermix, and co-curated with Robert Riley the exhibition Machine Media: Steina and Woody Vasulka at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1996.
