neuroTransmitter

neuroTransmitter (nT), founded in 2001, is a collaborative group of artists working with radio machinations. http://www.neurotransmitter.fm/ neuroTransmitter has created visual works, as well as performed and broadcast live on local bandwidths and in public spaces and galleries internationally, including: The Low Power to High Power Broadcast Media Tour (at the RNC, 2004); Digitofagia Festival, Museu da Imagem e do Som, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2004); Festival Garage, Straslund, Germany (2004); Summer Selections 2004, Drawing Center, NYC; 09MutterXX04, Mutter Museum, Philadelphia (2004); Liquidacion Total, Madrid, Spain (2003); Brewster 2003, NY; Raw, Smack Mellon Studios, NYC (2003); and S-Files Exhibition, Museo del Barrio, NY (2002).

nT has also lectured and performed at the New School; the Radio Lab at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany; Musterraum, Munich, Germany; and at NIFCA, Helsinki, Finland. From 2003-2004, nT was an Artist-in-Residence with the research and development program at Eyebeam Atelier, NYC.

neuroTransmitter (nT) is an artists' collaborative that is interested in prefacing the relationship between FM radio technology and the body, and how the two together, through mobile wearable experience, negotiate, perform, and sonically map urban space. This simultaneous occupation of physical and ether space shifts positionalities and creates collaborations between transmitter and receiver, body, sound, and the socio-spatial landscape. To complement their fixed and mobile frequency performances, nT creates radio-sonic installations, produces music, and converts utilitarian objects into radio transmission and receiving devices.

Tapping into the radio frequency spectrum, neuroTransmitter's radio-sonic installations reference the history and technology of the medium while remaining situated within contemporary art practice. Frequency Performance is the term that nT uses for radio broadcast performances, that incorporate live, mixed, and pre-recorded sound, that move through an urban environment. These performances, along with nT's installations and visual works, operate beneath boundaries set by commercial broadcast interests, using the invisibility of the radio-sonic airwaves to render an alternate form.

    Mark Hosler is a founding member of the experimental sound collage band Negativland; since 1980 the group has created records, videos, and radio and live performances using appropriated sound, image, and text. Negativland coined the term culture jamming in 1984; the group has twice been sued for copyright infringement and, since 1991, has publicly advocated significant reform of U.S. copyright laws. As a member of Negativland, Hosler has coauthored essays and articles on these issues for Billboard, Keyboard, College Music Journal, and NYU Law Commentator.

  • Phill Niblock People

    Phill Niblock (born Indiana, 1933) is an intermedia artist working in music, film, photography, video and computers. Since the mid-1960s he has presented work at venues including the Museum of Modern Art, The Kitchen and Palais des Beaux Arts and on radio in the U.S. and Europe. He received grants including Guggenheim and NEA support; he has directed the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York since 1985 and produced about 800 Music and Intermedia presentations at EIF. He creates installations combining 16mm color film, slides, video and multi-channel tape; his music uses dense tunings and his films document people working in non-urban locations worldwide.

  • Design Device - A Unique Video Synthesizer Tools

    Proposal from WMHT TV to the New York State Council on the Arts for the Design Device, a hybrid video synthesizer conceived by Tom DeWitt and Phil Edelstein in 1975 after sketches in Poughkeepsie; DeWitt developed the design drawing on documentation from an NEA Fellowship and with graphic help from Vibeke Sorensen. The instrument was specified to combine vector and intensity approaches, include RAM-based memory oscillators, a RuttEtra display, a camera-controlled matrix switch, a colorizer-sync adder and interfacing to PDP-11/10 computers; WMHT and the Electronic Music Studio at SUNYA supplied facilities and some equipment, the NEA awarded a $10,000 grant in April 1975, and the proposal budget totaled $22,000.26.
