New York Upstate Meeting of Non-Profit Media Groups March 9, 1979 at Synapse Video Center, Syracuse, NY. Groups met to continue discussion about formation of an organization eventually known as Media Alliance, representing service organizations and individual media artists in New York State.

Meeting of non-profit media groups convened March 9, 1979 at Synapse Video Center in Syracuse to continue discussions about forming an organization eventually known as Media Alliance; attendees included representatives from museums, university media centers, community video projects and public broadcasters, including Everson Museum, Experimental Television Center, Vasulka Corporation, Visual Studies Workshop, WCNY-TV and WXXI-TV. A subsequent meeting in New York City involved John Reilly, Mary MacArthur, Leandra Strobing, Tom Morey, Willoughby Sharp, Davidson Gigliotti, John Sanborn, Michael Rothbard, Kathie Bodily and Liza Bear representing Global Village, The Kitchen and Inter-Media Art Center.

    Report on the New York Media Alliance annual meeting held May 6–7, 1983 at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester; members debated finances, fundraising models, a proposed newsletter versus low-tech mimeographed notices, and adopted a plan to hold five meetings on production, distribution, exhibition, education, and preservation. Tensions between organizations and independent producers surfaced, with contributions from Gerald O'Grady, Skip Blumberg, Margot Lewitin, Julie Harrison, Tony Conrad, Emily Armstrong, Matthew Geller, John Giancola (NYSCA) and Ralph Hocking (Experimental Television Center). The Alliance had a $21,000 1983 operating budget with $10,000 spent; NYSCA granted $20,000 in 1982–83 ($10,000 outright, $10,000 matched), the group raised $5,500, and director Robin White had funding for roughly six more months.

    Media Alliance held a General Membership meeting in Rochester on May 6-7, 1983; panels addressed Public Access Cable TV, the Evolution of Media Centers, and Media Centers and Independent Artists/Producers. Participants included Jaime Davidovich (Artists Television Network), Alexis Greene, Chuck Sherwood (Channel L Working Group), David Shapiro (independent producer), Margot Lewitin (Womens Interart Center), Walter Borton (Ithaca Video Projects), Robert Shea (Portable Channel), Nathan Lyons (Visual Studies Workshop), Carol Brandenberg (TV Lab), Skip Blumberg (independent producer), Ralph Hocking (Experimental Television Center), Tony Conrad (independent producer), Emily Armstrong (Production Facilities Project) and Kit Fitzgerald (independent producer); a screening was held at Pyramid Art Center.

  • Media Alliance Chronology

    Meeting to formalize Media Alliance was held November 2–3, 1979 at Media Study/Buffalo; representatives from organizations including Donnell Film Library, Experimental Intermedia Foundation, Hallwalls, IMAC and The Kitchen attended; By Laws and a statement of purpose were drafted and distributed. The annual membership meeting was set for January 25, 1980 in New York City; agenda items included voting on the Board of Directors, discussion of funding for Media Alliance and a report from the Telecommunications Committee.
