ROBERTO GUERRA is an international documentary film director, producer and cinematographer. Born in Lima, Peru, he graduated with a degree in engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria, Lima. He subsequently turned his attention to film, both producing and directing in Perv? before working in Paris, London and New York. For more than twenty-five years, he collaborated with Eila Hershon on films on a diversity of subjects that have included portraits of artists and profiles of international personalities in the worlds of fashion and design. The films have always been characterized by a sense of involvement and intimacy with the subjects and by the depth of cultural sub-text. Some of the titles include: Frida Kahlo, which won the first prize at the Montreal Festival of Films on Art; Oskar Kokoschka; Hans Haacke; Seventy Five Years of Cinema (as seen through the eyes of Henri Langlois); Chanel, Chanel (a portrait of the fashion designer); The Story of Fashion (a three-hour series on twentieth century fashion); The Beauty Queens (a three-hour series profiling Helena Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden and Estv©e Lauder); By Design (a six-part series profiling Elliott Erwitt, Lella and MassimoVignelli, Milton Glaser, Benjamin and Jane Thompson, Karl Lagerfeld, and Richard Sapper), followed by Design, another six hour series on central topics in this field, including short profiles of over 25 designers. The films are international in scope and of timeless significance. Over thirty films have been repeatedly broadcast by major networks in over thirty-five countries, including ABC Australia, TV Ontario Canada, Antenne 2 France, ZDF Germany, RAI TV 2 Italy, Channel Four UK, PBS, A&E, BRAVO, The Learning Chanel, USA. The films have also been featured in international film festivals in New York, Edinburgh, London, Cannes, Montreal, and Los Angeles, as well as at major museums and other venues, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the United Nations, Harvard University, and in the film museums of Paris, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Rome, and Tokyo. The films have also successfully penetrated the home video market, and have been critically acclaimed in both the Arts and TV pages of major international magazines and newspapers. For the past four years, he has been collaborating with Kathy Brew, working on a range of different independent projects. Their most recent project has been a collaboration with artist Mierle Ukeles, creating a multiple-channel installation about the Fresh Kills landfill, which is included in an exhibition opening at Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island in October 2001, running through January 2002. Another recent work is Paradise Now: Picturing the Genetic Revolution, produced in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title, that involves interviews with artists and scientists, which was broadcast on WNET/Thirteen's Metro Arts in January 2001 and was presented at the International Festival of Art on Film in Montreal in March 2001. Brew and Guerra have also independently produced segments for WNET‚Äôs City Arts and Egg, and have received two Emmy awards for Outstanding Fine Arts programming (1999 and 2000).
