Darrin Martin's videotapes, sculptures and installations metaphorically explore the world as cross-wired sensory interface and investigate how technology continually blurs the space between labor, relaxation and recreation. He studied video with Peer Bode at N.Y.S.C.C in Alfred University and digital media with Lev Manovich at UC San Diego. He has exhibited videos and performances internationally at festivals and museums including The Museum of Modern Art, DIA Center for the Arts, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Arts, Pacific Film Archives and The European Media Art Festival in Germany. His installations have exhibited at venues such as The Kitchen, WRO Media Arts Biennale in Poland and Pacific Switchboard in Portland. Martin worked with Joanna Spitzner programming two video series in New York City, one at Art in General and the other at the Knitting Factory. We also co-programmed and co-curated a weekly video series at The Knitting Factory. He continued his curatorial interests touring Circus Momentous, an exhibit of film/video, performance and fine art oddities through California in the late 90's, and still occasionally curates and co-curates video/film screenings at various venues. Martin has collaborated with artists including Peer Bode, Marc Grubstein, Joseph Scheer and Jessie Shefrin. However, his most frequent collaborations have been with Torsten Zenas Burns building diverse speculative fictions around reimagined educational practices. Their works have screened and exhibited at venues including The Oberhausen Short Film Festival, The New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center, Cinematexas in Austin, The Madrid Museum of Contemporary Art, The Paris/Berlin International, Champ Libre in Montreal, and Eyebeam in New York. An excerpt from their epic Learning Stalls: Lesson Plans is included as part of Soft Science, a program of film/videos that is available via Video Data Bank in Chicago. Darrin Martin has been an artist in residence at Citè Internationale des Arts in Paris, Eyebeam Atelier in New York City, The Experimental Television Center Residency in Owego, NY and at The Hallwalls Video Residency Program in Buffalo, NY. He has taught video and digital media at The Atlanta College of the Arts, California State University at San Marcos, Southwestern in Chula Vista, CA, and N.Y.S.C.C, School of Art and Design at Alfred University in Alfred, NY.
