Gerald O'Grady, Director of Center for Media Study at University of Buffalo, began the Oral History of the Independent American Cinema. Three filmmakers - Stan Brakhage, Peter Kubelka and Hollis Frampton - were invited to interview five fellow filmmakers.

    Gerald O'Grady, Ph.D., joined the University at Buffalo in 1967 and founded and directed UB's Center for Media Study in 1972 while founding Media Study (Buffalo). He directed UB's Educational Communications Center (serving 128 departments), was Visiting Scholar in Harvard's Department of Afro-American Studies and Fellow of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute researching films of the American civil rights movement, and produced documentaries for PBS. His projects received funding from the Ford, Rockefeller, Markle, MacArthur, NEA and NEH; since 1979 he edited over 30 catalogues for film retrospectives and coordinated the November 21–22, 1974 conference at SUNY Albany.

Dr. Gerald O'Grady founded and directed CMS in 1972 and led initiatives including an Oral History of the Independent American Cinema and multiple conferences and summer institutes; CMS offered undergraduate and graduate coursework and degrees in media-making, history/theory and social effects of media, maintained extensive film and video facilities, and recorded over five hundred hours of filmmaker interviews.     Report on the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar at Vassar College marking its 50th year; founded in 1955 by Frances Flaherty, the week-long program convened filmmakers, museum programmers, writers, students, and distributors for screenings, public and small-group discussions, and retrospectives. Programmer Susan Oxtoby (Cinematheque Ontario) juxtaposed documentary and experimental work and presented films including Brault and Perrault's Pour la Suite du Monde (1963), Ulrike Ottinger's Taiga (1992), Bruce Conner's Crossroads (1976), Marlon Riggs's Tongues Untied (1989), and Juan Manuel Echavarria's Bocas de Ceniza (2004). Panels debated media circulation strategies from a national Arte-style TV network to straight-to-DVD and internet distribution, and screenings provoked discussions of verite ethics, representation, and archival/experimental practice.
