Paul Devlin

Bios THE FILMMAKERS PAUL DEVLIN director, producer, editor, camera. A five-time Emmy winner for his work on NBC's Olympics and CBS's Tour de France, Paul Devlin's films include Power Trip, which screened in 60 countries, theatrically across the United States and on PBS's Independent Lens, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and has won 10 film festival awards, including top prizes at Berlin, Hot Docs in Toronto, and Florida. Paul also made the award-winning film SlamNation, which follows the fierce competition at the National Poetry Slam and helped popularize the dynamic genre with its release in theaters and on HBO/Cinemax and Encore/Starz.

Paul's current projects include BLAST and Through the Storm. Other credits include his fiction film The Eyes of St. Anthony and his work as producing editor on the Organic Film FREESTYLE: The Art of Rhyme, broadcast on VH1 and winner of the Special Jury Award for Documentary Filmmaking at the Florida Film Festival. As an editor, Paul's extensive credits include commercials, music videos, television shows and major sports broadcasts, including CBS's Super Bowls and ABC/ESPN's World Cup Soccer.

As a video-maker she collaborated with Roberto Guerra on work shown at the MIT Media Lab exhibition ID/entity Portraits in the 21st Century, which was selected for the 2003 International Festival of Art on Film in Montreal; she has received two Emmys (1999, 2000).

    Mike Camoin is an Albany-based filmmaker whose documentaries Inside the Blue Line and How to Make an Adirondack Packbasket focus on diminishing Adirondack culture; Inside the Blue Line won Best Short Documentary at the 1996 NYS Capital Film Slam and a Certificate of Merit at the 38th Rochester International Amateur Film Festival. Each program aired on PBS-TV stations across the northeast and was self-distributed. Camoin founded Upstate Independents and the Albany-AIVF Salon (1995), was voted Best Local Filmmaker by Metroland (1999), and his company Videos For Change, LLC was selected by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Incubator in Troy, NY where projects including streaming media work are in development; he holds a Masters in Social Work from the State University of New York at Albany.

  • Jem Cohen People

    Jem Cohen is a Brooklyn-based director and cameraman whose 17-year practice is built from an archive of street footage, portraits and sound; he shoots in many locations and blends documentary, narrative and experimental approaches. BENJAMIN SMOKE (co-directed with Peter Sillen) premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and won 1st prize at the DoubleTake Documentary Fest, and LOST BOOK FOUND won prizes at Locarno. His work has been broadcast by BBC, PBS, Planete and The Sundance Channel, is held by MoMA and the Whitney, and he is a Rockefeller and Guggenheim fellow.

  • Owen Shapiro People

    Owen Shapiro directs the Film Program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University and founded the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival (SIFVF), serving as its artistic director with executive director Christine Fawcett Shapiro. He has led the program since 1973, designed the B.F.A. and M.F.A. curricula and film facilities in the Shaffer Art Building, and has made over 30 films and a dozen videos. His work received a 1976 retrospective at the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris and a 1987 Fulbright Fellowship to teach at Tel-Aviv University.
