Peter Horvath

Peter Horvath works in video, sound, photo-based and new media. Camera in hand since age 6, he inhaled darkroom fumes until his late 20's, then began exploring art forms in time based media. Immersed himself in digital technologies at the birth of the Web, co-founded 6168.org, a site for net.art, and adopted techniques of photo-montage which he uses in his net based and 2D works.

Exhibitions include the Whitney Museum Of American Art's Artport, the 17th Stuttgarter Filmwinter (Stuttgart, Germany), FILE 2004 (S‚o Paulo, Brazil), Video Zone International Video Art Biennial (Tel Aviv, Israel), the Thailand New Media Art Festival (Bangkok, Thailand), the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (Québec City, Canada) as well as venues in New York, Tokyo, London, and numerous net.art showings. He is a founding member of the net.art collective Hell.com. He likes to consider a future when high bandwidth will be free.

  • Walter Wright People

    Walter Wright began creating electronic images and sound at the University of Waterloo in 1966 and worked as a video artist, animator and software engineer at Computer Image Corp. and Dolphin Productions (operating a Scanimate); he collaborated with Ed Emshwiller on Thermogenisis and Scapemates and showed tapes regularly at the Kitchen where he was assistant director. As artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center, NY 1973-76 he pioneered video performance, toured with the Paik/Abe video synthesizer and joined a 1978 LSI-11 computer-to-video system project supported by the NEA. He is a member of Boston collective VideoSpace, co-founder of 911 Gallery, developed the Video Shredder and performed across the US east coast and Canada.

    Sara Hornbacher, Guest Editor, frames eleven articles and reviews and includes Barbara Londons Selected Chronology covering 196393 to outline the brief history of video art. Contributors examine technological and institutional change, including Benjamin Buchloh on developments since the mid-1960s; Katherine Dieckmann on Electra at the Mus6e d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1984); Lucinda Furlong on image-processed video and Nam June Paik and the marketing of portable video equipment by SONY/Japan; and the rise of media centers funded by state and federal agencies and university programs. Hornbacher is a visual artist, curator and artist-in-residence at The Experimental Television Center, Owego, New York, since 1976.

  • Pioneers of Digital Photography Bibliography

    Mary Ross curated Pioneers of Digital Photography at Open Space Gallery, Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1998 and lectured at the Video History conference at Syracuse University, Oct. 16–18, 1998; the exhibition was supported by the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and private foundations. The essay surveys 1960s–1980s artists who combined photographic processes with electronic and digital media, assembling 60 works by 18 artists. It documents technologies such as photocopiers, Kirilian photograms, Portapak recorders, video synthesizers and early computers at Experimental Television Center, citing practitioners Nam June Paik and Sonia Landy Sheridan.
