"Founded in 1977, the Center is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) arts and educational organization.  Services include: darkroom, library, slide/video archives, permanent print collections, slide registry, classes, lectures, film/video screenings, workshops, gallery talks, internships, portfolio reviews, and memberships.  Center galleries and educational resources are free and open to the public.... The Center's mission is to provide an artistic home for contemporary photographers with programs in education, exhibition, publication, and services which create access to professional workspace, nourishing responses, and new audiences." (1)  "The Center receives funding from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as many major corporate and private donors." (2)

Other publications of the Center for Photography at Woodstock's include PHOTOGRAPHY Center Quarterly#: Building Links, PHOTOGRAPHY Building Links, and The Surrogate Figure: Intercepted Identities in Contemporary Photography.

"Since 1979 the Center has supported the Woodstock Photography Workshops program, attracting master photographers who create and share images with workshop participants, providing hands-on work, problem-solving, and critiques." (3)

Founded in 1977, the Center for Photography at Woodstock is a 501(c)(3) arts and educational organization offering a darkroom and archives. Its galleries and educational resources are free and open to the public; its mission supports contemporary photographers through education, exhibition and publication. Funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and corporate and private donors, the Center publishes PHOTOGRAPHY Center Quarterly, PHOTOGRAPHY Building Links and The Surrogate Figure and has supported the Woodstock Photography Workshops since 1979; http://www.cpw.org.

    James Lohrey's 1999 Media Center Highlighted Screenings/Lectures 1972–Present lists visiting artists, screenings, lectures and festivals at Visual Studies Workshop from 1972 to 1999, noting establishment of the Media Center, Visiting Artist Program and the NO‑TV series. John Minkowsky's 1977 survey describes the Program in Photographic Studies offering an MFA through University Center at Buffalo under Nathan Lyons; the two‑and‑a‑half‑year, workshop‑oriented curriculum includes concentrated projects and a six‑month internship. Facilities cited include a Research Center with over 8,000 books, 250 magazine titles and 100,000 images, conservation and restoration, a bookbindery, a travelling exhibition program and a publications program producing Afterimage and visual books.

  • Woodstock Video Expovision Chronology

    Woodstock Community Video, Woodstock, New York, presented the first Woodstock Video Expovision in August 1975 over a five-day period; the program comprised tape showings by 50 NYS video makers, a video synthesizer demonstration, and an electronic media performance with dance. The event included a presentation by the Earthscore Foundation on ecological and behavioral philosophies of media and a video environment by artists of Media Bus; a panel discussion featured Gerd Stern of Intermedia Systems, Barbara London of the Museum of Modern Art, and John Godfrey of WNET's Experimental TV Lab.
