Richard Herskowitz

Richard Herskowitz has been the Artistic Director of the Virginia Film Festival since 1994. Prior to his recruitment by the University of Virginia (the festival's host institution), Herskowitz directed the Cornell Cinema program, one of the country's best-known media art centers, for twelve years. As Cornell Cinema Director, he programmed nearly 500 films and special programs annually for the nightly exhibition program.

He also served as adjunct curator for film and video at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, where he organized exhibitions by Derek Jarman, Joan Jonas, Bruce and Norman Yonemoto, and other artists. He has authored film commentary for several academic and general publications, delivered talks at the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center, and recently served as trustee and president of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar (which Herskowitz programmed in 1987 at Wells College, 1991 in Riga, Latvia, and 1999 at Duke University). He received a Master of Arts in film studies from the University of Wisconsin in 1978 and has taught numerous film courses at U.Va., Cornell, Rutgers, and other universities. www.vafilm.com

    Cornell Cinema, founded in 1970 as a university film society and now a media arts center, programs close to 400 films and videos annually, seven nights a week in the Willard Straight Theatre and hosts visiting filmmakers.   • Owen Shapiro People

    Owen Shapiro directs the Film Program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University and founded the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival (SIFVF), serving as its artistic director with executive director Christine Fawcett Shapiro. He has led the program since 1973, designed the B.F.A. and M.F.A. curricula and film facilities in the Shaffer Art Building, and has made over 30 films and a dozen videos. His work received a 1976 retrospective at the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris and a 1987 Fulbright Fellowship to teach at Tel-Aviv University.

    John G. Hanhardt is Senior curator of film and media arts at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; he holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester and an M.A. from New York University. He was film coordinator at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1972–74) and curator and head of the film and video department at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1974–96). He curated exhibitions and film and video series at the Whitney and Guggenheim, edited Video Culture: A Critical Investigation (1986) and received the Peter Norton Family Foundation Curator's Grant (1993).
