Robert Martinez

voltage controlled started in the early 90's when two friends, robert christopher martinez and paris treantafeles began to experiment with abandoned technology, seeking new sounds and new ways of creating music. experiments began by creating music with analog synthesizers, finding ways to have them generate patterns, melodies and rhythmic patterns without using keyboard or other conventional devices. originally working together in california, we created a few audio releases, a weekly tv show and held some live performances.

today chris is in california and paris in new york and we are experimenting with various forms of collaboration. chris continues to maintain the main voltage controlled studio full of electronics and finds new ways to create with the set up. paris does freelance computer work in nyc.

  • Stephen Beck People

    Stephen Beck, born in Chicago (1950) and educated at the University of Illinois at Urbana and the University of California, Berkeley, worked in the electronic music studio at Urbana and became involved with Experiments in Art and Technology. He built his first video synthesizer in 1968, developed the Beck Direct Video Synthesizer (circa 1970–72) and the Video Weaver (1974), and produced Video Weavings (1976); his instruments combined analog circuitry and early digital logic gate chips. He was artist-in-residence at NCET (1970–73), formed Beck - Tech and other consulting firms, and lives in Berkeley as president of Electron Video Creations; his work is available from Video Data Bank and Electronic Arts Intermix.

  • Voltage Control and the Analog Synthesizer - from Experimental Television Center Studio System Manual Tools

    Experimental Television Center's Analog Synthesizer is a modular system producing control voltages and synthesized audio; outputs conform to a -5V to +5V standard (10V peak-to-peak) and the unit is compatible with commercial audio synthesis equipment. The studio manual documents two boxes of modules and their controls and jacks — negative and positive ramps, triangle, waveshape shaper, inverter, random, one-shot and pulse, comparators, mixers, dual VCAs, VCFs and a VCO — with operating ranges, VC/gain/bias/Q functions and typical patching techniques. The text includes signal classifications (bias, function, waveshape) and suggested patches for oscillation, gating, sampling, panning and filtering.

  • Video Processing Facility at National Center for Experiments in Television at KQED-TV, San Francisco (c 1972) Tools

    At the National Center for Experiments in Television (KQED-TV, San Francisco; c. 1972) Lawrence W. Templeton designed and built a flexible video Mixer to replace conventional two-bus switchers, using patch cords and experimental plug-in modules. The Mixer incorporated keyers, colorizers, a color modulator, an edge generator, feedback delay lines, a multi-keyer and six distribution amplifiers, and accepted inputs from two Sony DXC-2000A B/W cameras, a Sony DXC-5000 color camera and a Beck Direct Video Synthesizer. Circuit engineer Richard Stephens built a handheld remote control switcher; control was also demonstrated via Buchla Electric Music Box control voltages.

  • Direct Video: Electronic Artform for Color Television Tools

    In 1970 Stephen Beck received a grant to develop the Direct Video Synthesizer for the National Center for Experiments in Television at KQED-TV in San Francisco. He designed and built the synthesizer with support from the National Endowment for the Arts; the prototype comprises circuit and control modules that operate with the scanned video raster, accept sync and drive pulses, and output parallel RGBY for NTSC color. Beck outlines an aesthetic model of form, motion, texture and color and a technical mapping using pulse-width modulation, waveshaping and RGB distribution.
