  • Alex Chechile People

    Alex Chechile is a New York based artist and composer who explores sound, physiology, psychoacoustics and cognitive science through analogue modular synthesis and self‑constructed biofeedback systems (brain/nervous system). His work comprises compositions for electronics and acoustic and electro‑acoustic chamber ensembles, Internet2 telepresence performances, installations, videos and interactive stop‑motion animations. He has been supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, Harvestworks and The Experimental Television Center; his work has been presented at SIGGRAPH (San Francisco) and Tbilisi 6 Festival; he is a founding member of Pauline Oliveros' Tintinnabulate ensemble, has collaborated with Mercury Rev and holds an MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic and a BA from Tufts University.

    Pauline Oliveros was a composer, performer and humanitarian who opened sensibilities to sound; since the 1960s she influenced American Music through improvisation, meditation and electronic music. Her recognitions include John Rockwell's naming of Bye Bye Butterfly, US representation at the Osaka World's Fair, a Kennedy Center retrospective and a letter of distinction from the American Music Center at Lincoln Center. She founded the Pauline Oliveros Foundation Inc. in Kingston, NY (1985); her awards include a Bessie and an NEA Fellowship, she appears on more than 17 recordings and has written for the Leonardo Music Journal.

    Elodie Lauten was described as a pioneer of the postminimalist movement and released recordings across piano, electronic, electro-acoustic, chamber and operatic media. She received awards and commissions from major arts organizations, including the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP and Meet the Composer. VARIATIONS ON THE ORANGE CYCLE (Lovely Music) was included in Chamber Music Americas 1999 list of 100 best 20th-century works; a June 2001 production of WAKING IN NEW YORK at the 14 St Y Theater was hailed by The New York Times as lovely, effecting and affecting.

    Bill Viola (born 1951, Flushing, New York) is a video artist who since the 1970s has used broadcast-quality electronic technology to produce videotapes and video-and-sound installations exploring layers of human consciousness; he trained at Syracuse University (College of Visual and Performing Arts, 1973) and worked at Synapse and WNET/Thirteen's Artists' Television Laboratory. He has collaborated with Kira Perov and engineers such as John Godfrey, lived and worked in Japan (including Sony's Atsugi facility), settled in southern California in 1981, and created works including Four Songs (1976), Chott el-Djerid (1979), Ancient of Days (1979–81), Hatsu Yume (1981), Reasons for Knocking (1982), Room for St. John of the Cross (1983), I Do Not Know What It Is I Am Like (1986), and Passage (1987).
