Envision Television: Charting the Cultural Geography of Homelessness Groups

Envision Television (e-TV) was a DCTV-run media literacy and video production scholarship funded by the Soros Foundation's Open Society Institute that trained 40 young people living in temporary housing at Brooklyn's Amboy Neighborhood Center and the HELP center in the Bronx; DCTV instructors taught scriptwriting, camera operation, interviewing and computer-assisted non-linear editing and provided digital cameras, lights, microphones and access to a Cyberstudio. Trainees produced PSAs screened on 29 June 2000 and documentaries including Straight from the Hood that document homelessness, gang culture and the criminalization of the homeless; instruction was provided by Renata Gangemi and Orlando Richards.
