Set in Motion: The New York State Council on the Arts Celebrates 30 Years of Independents: On Television Bibliography
This essay documents artists and collectives who used public access cable, satellite links and low-power transmission to experiment with live and interactive television in New York from the early 1970s through the 1990s; it describes Bill Beirne's 1976 street performance Cross Reference at 23rd Street and Park Avenue, cablecast by Manhattan Cable Television and sponsored by The Kitchen. It recounts Douglas Davis's live two-way cablecasts (1976–77) and the 1977 Whitney telecast, the establishment of WNET/13's TV Lab in 1972 funded by NYSCA and the Rockefeller Foundation, and projects by TVTV, Image Union, Lanesville TV and Paper Tiger Television.
