The Beat Among Us: Jud Yalkut Interview

Jud Yalkut (born 1938) is an experimental filmmaker, videographer, educator, painter, poet and art critic who helped bridge film and video and collaborated with Nam June Paik and Yayoi Kusama. He worked with the multi-media group USCO, made The Aquarian Rushes (1969) documenting Woodstock and completed a 1998 documentary on Pee Wee Russell. A Bronx native who studied at City College and McGill (where he befriended Leonard Cohen), he has lived in Dayton since 1973, taught experimental media at Wright State (1973–77) and received multiple Ohio Arts Council fellowships and an Ohio Humanities mini‑grant for Walking the Nickel, premiered April 14 at the Dayton Cultural Center; his films have been shown at the Guggenheim and a Whitney retrospective is scheduled.
