The Computer: A Tool for Thought-Experiments Bibliography
The author argues that computers, as symbol-processing machines, can simulate mental acts of creative activity and enable artists to design autonomous machines that perform artistic activities and produce art objects. He frames this with references to Hegel and Malina and surveys artists' responses to machines, including Moholy-Nagy and LeWitt. He presents technical case studies of electronic and digital imaging, notably Woody and Steina Vasulka's experiments with the Rutt-Etna synthesizer and a mid-1970s image articulator with A/D and D/A converters and an ALU; themes include dematerialization and aesthetic simulation.

The Gate Theater Bibliography
On 12 July, 1962 the narrator performed at MoMA during Aldo Tamellini's Award of the Golden Screw; Aldo then opened The Center in a Lower East Side loft and organized a festival at St. Mark's-in-the-Bouwery Church. In October 1963 St Mark's hosted an independent sculpture show of forty U.S. sculptors; in 1964 Aldo began projection work and the narrator served as assistant projectionist and coordinator for intermedia events using slides, film and light equipment. The narrator opened The Gate Theatre to screen underground films and, with Aldo and Otto Piene, founded the Black Gate Electromedia Theater above the auditorium; legal conflicts included a three-month battle over flag burning and threats related to the underground film Brothel.

The Kitchen Bibliography
The Kitchen Center for Video and Music was founded in 1971 by Woody and Steina Vasulka and relocated in 1973 from the Broadway Central Hotel kitchen to a Broome Street loft. Initially funded through Howard Wise and Electronic Arts Intermix, it became the non-profit Haleakala, Inc. under Robert Stearns and shifted from funding experiments to presenting electronic music and video works. It has shown tapes and performances by artists including Juan Downey, operates a video room for 1/2- and 3/4-inch tapes, publishes a monthly calendar and catalog, and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

She describes BF/VF's continuing education, exhibition (including the New England Film & Video Festival and Meet the Director), artists' resources and the Intervisions newsletter, and emphasizes lessons about organizational size, strategic planning, staff professional development and selective governance; she earned an MBA from Simmons and joined Northern Light Productions in April 2001.

The Politics of Video Memory: Electronic Erasures and Inscriptions from Resolutions: Contemporary Video Practices Bibliography
Essay examines how photographic, cinematic and television-video images produce personal and cultural memory while simultaneously enabling forms of forgetting; it argues that television's live flow and videotape materiality complicate preservation and historical status. It surveys independent video practices and collectives (Videofreex, Raindance) and analyzes works by Woody Vasulka (Art of Memory, 1987), Rea Tajiri (History and Memory, 1991), Janice Tanaka (Memories from the Department of Amnesia, 1990; Who's Going to Pay for These Donuts, Anyway?, 1992) and Jeanne Finley (Nomads at the 25 Door, 1991), addressing Japanese American internment, Yugoslavia (1990), televised events (Challenger, Tiananmen, Berlin Wall) and videotape deterioration. The artists use videotape, found footage and reenactment to create counter-memories, bear witness and contest national narratives.
