The Development of a Video Art Facility by Electronic Body Arts, Inc Tools
Phil Edelstein and Tom DeWitt conceived the Pantograph in 1975; they developed a television-camera-to-minicomputer score reader and held residencies at the WNET TV Laboratory with EBA dancers in Studio 46. NYSCA/WMHT funding in 1975–77 provided equipment support that led EBA to begin building the Pantomation system in November 1976; the Pantograph was publicly demonstrated on September 14, 1977 at the University at Albany Performing Arts Center. After WMHT withdrew programs in July 1977 RPI students provided WQPI space; in April 1978 DeWitt received $12,000 from the Guggenheim and $6,000 from the NEA and EBA completed a commissioned tape for exhibition on April 28.
The Eidophor Television System Tools
Invented in 1939 and developed from the early 1940s in Zurich by Dr. Fritz Fisher, the Eidophor projector used a thin oil film on a rotating spherical mirror in vacuum scanned by a 15 kV electron gun to produce surface corrugations that diffracted arc or xenon lamp light through a Schlieren-like bar-and-slit optical system. Used extensively from the early 1950s into the 1980s, it incorporated CBS field-sequential and later dot-sequential color wheels and supported large-screen projection; documentation includes SMPTE articles (1950, 1953) and Eidophor training materials supplied by Bernhard Merk, Switzerland.
The Videola Tools
Don Hallock created the Videola at the National Center for Experiments in Television at KQED-TV, San Francisco; a color monitor in a mirrored pyramid produced an illusory spherical image 4x8 feet. It displayed images from camera, videotape recorder or video synthesizer; at NCET the Beck Direct Video Synthesizer was used as the input signal. The Videola was exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Art in September 1973 with videotape works by Hallock and a live performance by Stephen Beck; press coverage appeared in California Living, the San Francisco Chronicle and Artweek.
Ture Sjolander and Bror Wilkstrom Raster Scan Device Tools
Swedish artists Ture Sjolander and Bror Wikstrom produced early electronic paintings for National Swedish Television, notably TIME (1965–1966; commissioned 1966, televised 1966–69) and MONUMENT (1967; televised in France, Italy, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland in 1968). Their work used a temporarily built video synthesizer and waveform-generator modulation of video-scan-line rasters; Nam June Paik visited Elektronmusic Studion in Stockholm in July/August 1966. A March 12, 1974 letter from Rutt Electrophysics (signed Sherman Price) requests documentation on raster-distortion circuitry and modulation of the deflection voltage in the flying-spot telecine; a block diagram and image are included.

At the National Center for Experiments in Television (KQED-TV, San Francisco; c. 1972) Lawrence W. Templeton designed and built a flexible video Mixer to replace conventional two-bus switchers, using patch cords and experimental plug-in modules. The Mixer incorporated keyers, colorizers, a color modulator, an edge generator, feedback delay lines, a multi-keyer and six distribution amplifiers, and accepted inputs from two Sony DXC-2000A B/W cameras, a Sony DXC-5000 color camera and a Beck Direct Video Synthesizer. Circuit engineer Richard Stephens built a handheld remote control switcher; control was also demonstrated via Buchla Electric Music Box control voltages.
