- Shigeko Kubota People
Shigeko Kubota, born 1937 in Niigata, Japan, is a video artist and sculptor with numerous solo exhibitions including a 1996 survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art and shows in Paris and Milan; her work includes video sculpture and installations spanning 1968–1995 (DUCHAMPIANA, video sculptures 1975–1995). She participated in major group exhibitions and festivals including the Venice Biennale, Documenta 8 and multiple biennials; her work is in the Hara Museum and other collections. Education: B.A. in Sculpture, Tokyo University of Education (1960); residencies, curatorial and teaching posts include Anthology Film Archives and School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Grants include Maya Deren Award (1995), Guggenheim Fellowship (1987) and multiple NEA and New York State Council on the Arts fellowships.
