• The Electronic Image: A Travelling Workshop Chronology

  Ralph Hocking and Sherry Miller Hocking of the Experimental Television Center conducted The Electronic Image, a travelling workshop concerning image processing tools and techniques; the record gives dates 1980 and 1979–1980. The program was sponsored by the University Wide Committee on the Arts for 20 colleges and universities around NYS. Presentations took place at Jamestown Community College, Monroe Community College, Orange County Community College, Sullivan County Community College, Visual Studies Workshop, Mass Productions (Ithaca), Utica College and Anthology Film Archives.

  James Lohrey's 1999 Media Center Highlighted Screenings/Lectures 1972–Present lists visiting artists, screenings, lectures and festivals at Visual Studies Workshop from 1972 to 1999, noting establishment of the Media Center, Visiting Artist Program and the NO‑TV series. John Minkowsky's 1977 survey describes the Program in Photographic Studies offering an MFA through University Center at Buffalo under Nathan Lyons; the two‑and‑a‑half‑year, workshop‑oriented curriculum includes concentrated projects and a six‑month internship. Facilities cited include a Research Center with over 8,000 books, 250 magazine titles and 100,000 images, conservation and restoration, a bookbindery, a travelling exhibition program and a publications program producing Afterimage and visual books.

  Mary Ross curated Pioneers of Digital Photography at Open Space Gallery, Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1998 and lectured at the Video History conference at Syracuse University, Oct. 16–18, 1998; the exhibition was supported by the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and private foundations. The essay surveys 1960s–1980s artists who combined photographic processes with electronic and digital media, assembling 60 works by 18 artists. It documents technologies such as photocopiers, Kirilian photograms, Portapak recorders, video synthesizers and early computers at Experimental Television Center, citing practitioners Nam June Paik and Sonia Landy Sheridan.
