Toban Nichols

Toban Nichols is a San Francisco video and installation artist whose work has been regularly exhibited in galleries such as 291 Gallery in London, New Langton Arts in San Francisco, and The Seattle Art Museum since 1988.

Born in Smith Center, Kansas, Nichols received a BFA in Painting from Wichita State University in 1996 and an MFA in Digital Media and Videography from The San Francisco Art Institute in 2003. Toban has been an instructor for several years in painting, digital media, and in 2002, was honored to assist installation artist Ann Carlson and video artist Mary Ellen Strom in their residency at The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. http://robotobe.com/

    Bay Area Video Coalition organized TechArcheology: A Symposium on Installation Art Conservation at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on January 5–6, 2000; the event was supported by the Getty Foundation. About 25 invited participants attended, including representatives from the Getty Conservation Institute, MOMA, Tate Gallery, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pacific Film ARchives and SFMOMA; four installation artists present were Dara Birnbaum, Hary Hill, James Coleman and Steve McQueen.

    Marita Sturken is Associate Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California, and author of Tangled Memories (California, 1997), Thelma & Louise (British Film Institute, 2000), Practices of Looking (with Lisa Cartwright, Oxford, 2001), and co-editor of Technological Visions (Temple, 2004). She holds a PhD from the History of Consciousness program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and has published in journals including Representations, Public Culture, History and Theory, and Afterimage. She has written extensively about video art and the emergence of video, including catalogues for the Museum of Modern Art and Electronic Arts Intermix, and co-curated with Robert Riley the exhibition Machine Media: Steina and Woody Vasulka at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1996.
