Tom Roe

free103point9's Tom Roe is a sound transmission artist sometimes known as DJ Dizzy. He co-founded microradio stations 87X in Tampa, FL and free103point9 in Brooklyn, NY. Roe performs with transmitters using multiple bands (FM, CB, walkie-talkie), as well as prepared CDs, vinyl records, and various electronics. He has also written about music for The Wire, Signal to Noise, and The New York Post, among others.

Roe's writing about Free Jazz in New York recently appeared in The Wire's 20th Anniversary publication Undercurrents (Continuum). His collaboration with Matt Bua and Matt Mikas, Of The Bridge, premiered in Brooklyn! (2001) at the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art. Roe's Constructive Engagement, featuring manipulated recordings from recent political protests and Of The Bridge, both received funding from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. He co-curated Tune(In))) (2002), a one-night installation featuring over sixty sound artists performing live into six radio transmitters. Roe has also spoken on panels for Fairness and Accuracy in Media, the Grassroots Radio Conference, Anarchist Forum, and NYC Grassroots Media Conference.

    Matt Mikas is a sound artist and sonic anthropologist working in microradio, nightclubs and museums; he uses turntables as historian and performer. He curated the sound program for Dave Hickey's Ultralounge at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (January 2000), produced Tune(In))) (2003), an installation of over sixty sound artists into six transmitters, and premiered Of The Bridge with Matt Bua and Tom Roe in Brooklyn! (2001) at Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art. His Interactive Audio Response Kit is a composition and listening tool on two LPs.

    free103point9's Tune(In))) is a multi-channel, site-specific installation of live performance, sound, and video art using FM frequencies that engages listeners as active participants and stages a temporary, autonomous radio community. The text situates Tune(In))) within historical radio-art practices, citing Filippo Tomasso Marinetti's La Radia, Ezra Pound's radio operas Le Testament and Cavalcanti, John Cage's Imaginary Landscape #4, John Corbett's Radio Dada Manifesto and Ben Vautier's 1965 mail art The Postman's Choice. It outlines pirate and microcasting activity from early 1960s European offshore stations to Radio New York International (1987) and the 1990s microcasting campaign led by M'banna Kantako and Stephen Dunifer, noting a watered-down Low Power FM program implemented in 2001.

    Gregory Whitehead is a writer, audio artist and director of sea-crow media who produced over fifty radio features, voice works and earplays for programs in the United States and abroad; his productions include Dead Letters and Pressures of The Unspeakable (Prix Italia, 1992). He co-edited Wireless Imagination: Sound, Radio and the Avant-Garde (MIT Press), published essays on language, technology and the public, and received the Prix Futura/BBC Award for New Hörspiel; Dead Letters was selected for the Whitney Museum's American Century show.
