• Issues in Capturing Related Histories Panel Preservation

  Panel with Joel Chadabe (Electronic Music Foundation), Alain Depocas (Daniel Langlois Foundation) and Woody Vasulka addressed preservation of media art performances, installations and digital works, focusing on digitization, emulation and documentation. They gave examples: Chadabe cited Luigi Nono and John Cage’s Bird Cage; Vasulka described scanning and OCR of about thirty thousand pages (Czech Republic contract ~$1,900, outputs RTF and TIF/PDF); Depocas summarized the Daniel Langlois documentation centre (open October 2000), its bilingual relational database, recent acquisitions and a Guggenheim partnership on the Variable Media questionnaire and emulation case studies.

• Tim Murray - Cornell U. Society for the Humanities People

  Timothy Murray is a Professor of Comparative Literature and English at Cornell University and a new media curator; he founded and curates The Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art at the Cornell University Library. He organized the traveling exhibition Contact Zones: The Art of CD-Rom (1999–2001) and co-curated the (off-line) 'net.art' contest for INFOS 2002 in Ljubljana; he co-curates the on-line exhibition space CTHEORY Multimedia with Arthur and Marilouise Kroker. He has written catalogue essays for ZKM (Karlsruhe), The Power Plant (Toronto), Centro de la Imagen (Mexico City), and the Museum of Macau; his books include Drama Trauma (Routledge 1997) and Like a Film (Routledge 1993), and he is completing Digital Intensities (University of Minnesota Press) while editing Digitality and the Memory of Cinema (Temple University Press).

• Some Thoughts on Learning by Reading the Tools: Embodying the Time Image Bibliography

  Peer Bode of the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University (Alfred, New York) outlines contemporary media terms — and, next, time-based media, metonymy and next bodies — and situates them historically from Paleolithic cave performative spaces to present digital culture. He describes the IEA's activities (artist residencies, Smart Wall exhibitions, conferences, publishing), cites international media centers (ZKM, Ars Electronica, IRCAM, ISEA, Experimental Television Center, Harvest Works, Sigraph) and references the Whitney Image World exhibition (late 1980s) and Nam June Paik's 2000 Guggenheim retrospective curated by John Hanhardt.
