Video and the Art Museum

Video and the Art Museum, April 4-6, 1974. A three-day workshop and seminar at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse. Supported by the New York State Council on the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Included art presentations by William Wegman, Phil Niblock (film retrospectives), Frank Gilette, Walter Wright (Paik/Abe Synthesizer installation and demonstration, Experimental Television Center), Juan Downey (Video Trans America) and on-going tape screenings of Circuit: A Video Invitational and works by Andy Mann (Video Matrix), Ira Schneider (Manhattan is an Island), Nam June Paik (TV Garden and Video Buddha), Peter Campus (Closed Circuit Video). Other presentations included Video and the Art Museum, The Museum as Producer of Educational Programming, Cable TV and the Prospect for Museum Interaction, The Range of Creative Expression in Video, Funding for Video in the Museum, Aesthetics of Video: A Critical Overview and seminars in portapack training, and a production seminar at Synapse.

    Experimental Television Center presented the exhibition Information, Works and Activities at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, November 6–28, 1976; the program comprised installations, systems demonstrations, lectures, performances and continuous tape screening. Featured works and activities included projects by Peer Bode, Ralph Hocking, David Jones (Jones Video Synthesizer), Don McArthur (Computer Controlled Systems Graphics), Evangelos Dousmanis and Melanie Salzberg (multimedia portrait of Alfred Skerritt), Meryl Blackman, Sherry Miller, Walter Wright, Neil Zusman and Jane Wright. Videotapes were produced at the Center and the program was curated by Peer Bode and Sherry Miller; a broader list of participating artists is provided.

  • Everson Video 75 Groups

    The Everson Museum of Art established a video department in March 1972 with funding from the New York State Council on the Arts; James Harithas was Museum Director and David Ross served as the first video curator, followed by Richard Simmons as Curator in 1975, and the Department closed in 1981. The Department developed exhibitions, a small archive, community education programs and plans for cable TV participation; a donation from the Rosamond Gifford Foundation provided hardware and Synapse supplied post-production equipment. The archive grew to more than 200 tapes; restoration and cataloging efforts resumed under Director Sandra Trop in 1995 with Syracuse University assistance, and restored tapes were shown in 1998 during the Video History: Making Connections conference.

  • New Work in Abstract Video Imagery Chronology

    New Work in Abstract Video Imagery was exhibited at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse from 12/1 to 1/2/77; it was curated by Richard Simmons of the Everson Museum and listed as available for travel. Photo documentation by Carol Goss; the exhibition included works by Drew Browning, Barbara Buckner, Tom DeFanti, Gary Demos, Bill Etra, Rod Fountain, Carl Geiger, Carol Goss and other artists. The exhibition traveled to the Flint Institute (MI) and the Tweed Museum (MN).

  • Everson Video Revue Chronology

    Everson Video Revue was curated by Richard Simmons for the Everson Museum of Art in 1979–1980; exhibitions were held at the Everson Museum of Art (9/1–9/30/1979 and 2/1–3/2/1980), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (10/5–11/3/1979), the University Art Gallery, Berkeley (11/10–1/5/1979) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, LaJolla (February–March 1981). The program presented works by video artists and groups including Gregory Battcock, Nam June Paik, Skip Blumberg, John Margolies, Merce Cunningham, Rom DeFanti, Juan Downey, Ed Emshwiller, Kit Fitzgerald and John Sanborn, Pocket Video, Video Repetorie, Bill Viola and Lawrence Weiner.

    Everson Video Revue was curated by Richard Simmons for the Everson Museum of Art in 1979-1980; the exhibition was shown at the Everson Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the University Art Gallery, Berkeley, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla. The presentation lists works by numerous artists and video groups, among them Gregory Battcock, Nam June Paik, Skip Blumberg, Bill Viola and Lawrence Weiner.
