    Video Rewind: A Seminar on Early Video History (October 16, 1998) was a day-long seminar introducing curators, critics, librarians, archivists, funders, artists and students to independent video in America (1965–1980); it offered screenings, lectures and discussions on video art, documentary tapes and topics such as portapaks, closed-circuit video, collectives and cable TV. Seminar leader Deirdre Boyle (The New School) presented alongside Barbara London (Curator of Video, MoMA), Paul Ryan (McLuhan fellow) and Parry Teasdale (Videofreex). A full-day Video Preservation session, co-sponsored and organized by Media Alliance and Mona Jimenez, gathered representatives to report on preservation initiatives and funding trends.

    Creative Artists Public Service Program awarded Video Fellowships for 1979-80 to Mark Brady, Barbara Buckner, Maxi Cohen, Tom DeWitt, Ernest Gusella, Sara Hornbacher, Les Levine, Tony Ramos, Ira Schneider, Vibeke Sorensen, Arthur Tsuchiya and Edin Velez; the selection panel consisted of John Minkowsky, John Camelio, DOris Chase, Juan Downey, Gunilla Mallory Jones, Joan Logue and ANtonio Muntades. The Video Festival was exhibited in 18 locations around New York State.

    Global Village's 10th Annual Documentary Festival, The National Tour, is presented as a national tour; catalog essays were contributed by Ann-Sargent Wooster, Renee Tajima and Susan Linfield.   • Early Video History at Visual Studies Workshop Groups

    Under director Nathan Lyons, Visual Studies Workshop established a media center in 1973 with production facilities, workshops and exhibitions; early video activity increased in 1974 with student workshops and an equipment purchase supported by a 1973–74 New York State Council on the Arts grant. VSW hosted events including Polyfusion (Strasenburgh Planetarium, Sept 20–21, 1974), ran a 1974–75 visiting-artist program that included Nam June Paik and Bill Viola, and collaborated with WXXI and Portable Channel on broadcasts and exchanges. The Research Center holds extensive media-center files, and the videotape collection—augmented by Portable Channel (1989) and Ithaca Video Festival deposits (1993)—contains over 4,000 tapes.
