"Video and Television Review" begins

On February 7, 1976 the Television Laboratory at WNET/Channel 13 of NYC began "Video and Television Review", the weekly presentation of a series of experimental programs made by independent artists and producers or by the artists in residence at the WNET TV Lab and WGBH/Boston's Experimental Workshop as well as other experimental centers.

Most of the programs which were aired, including interviews with artists by host Russell Connor, were made available from Electronic Arts Intermix. The series was conceived by David Loxton.

Artists included TVTV (excerpts from Gerald Ford's America, Lord of the Universe and Four More Years), Ian Hugo (Transcending), Ed Emschwiller (Crossings and Meetings and Scape-Mates), John Reilly and Stefan Moore (The Irish Tapes), Skip Sweeney (Ocean), Andy Mann (All Across Boston), Peter Campus (Three Transitions and Set of Coincidence), Downtown Community Television Center (a profile of DCTV), Nam June Paik (Global Groove), Arthur Ginsberg and Video Free America (The Continuing Story of Carel and Ferd), Tom DeWitt (Cathode Ray Theater), Cara DeVito (Ama L'Uomo Tuo), and makers in the schools.

    The TV Lab at Thirteen was established in 1972 to develop television as an art form and ran Artist-In-Residence programs enabling video artists, choreographers, painters and graphic artists to work with portable tape equipment, synthesizers, lasers and computers and collaborated with Nam June Paik. The Lab administers the Independent Documentary Fund, created in fall 1977 with a $500,000 grant from the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts; IDF grants were first awarded February 1978 and funded works screened on PBS in NON-FICTION TELEVISION (premiered February 1979). The Lab announced a national weekly beginning April 4, 1980; David Loxton served as Director.

    The Television Laboratory was a unit at WNET/Thirteen in New York; it was founded with grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Directors included David Loxton and Carol Brandenburg; in its first year it initiated an artists-in-residence program that included Shirley Clarke, Douglas Davis, Ed Emshwiller and Nam June Paik.

  • WGBH New Television Workshop: Background of the The New Television Workshop at WGBH-TV Boston Groups

    In the late 1960s KQED, WNET and WGBH-TV established experimental television labs funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts to give artists access to television. Under WGBH producer Fred Barzyk the New Television Workshop and a Rockefeller Artists-in-Residence project began; the Workshop broadcast Medium is the Medium (1969) and Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe built the first video synthesizer there (1969–70). The Workshop opened a Watertown studio in 1974, donated equipment to the Boston Film/Video Foundation in 1978 and was closed by WGBH in 1993.
