    Nam June Paik (born Seoul, 1932) is a seminal video artist whose sculptures, installations, performances and tapes range from Fluxus-based performances and altered television sets in the early 1960s to multi-media videotapes and installations through the 1990s; he co-developed the Paik/Abe Synthesizer (1969) with Shuya Abe and collaborated with figures including John Cage, Merce Cunningham and Charlotte Moorman. He produced works such as Global Groove (1973), TV Buddha (1974) and TV Garden (1974–78), initiated satellite experiments at Documenta 6 (1977) including Good Morning Mr. Orwell (1984), studied in Tokyo (degree 1956) and Germany, worked at WDR (1958–63), taught at Staatlichen Kunstakademie from 1979, and received major awards including the Maya Deren Award, the 1993 Venice Biennale prize and the 1998 Kyoto Award.

    Essay traces the history and persistent critical opacity of video art from its emergence in the late 1960s through post-1975 developments; it situates early single-channel tapes and multi-channel installations in galleries and museums and surveys practitioners, institutions, broadcasts, and technologies including Nam June Paik, his Paik-Abe colorizer/synthesizer, three-quarter-inch color tape, image processing, WNET and independent video productions. The text links video practices to antecedents in literature, Dada, Surrealism, experimental film and Fluxus, and cites representative works such as Paik's Global Groove (1973), Bruce Connor's A Movie (1958), and Michael Snow's La Region Centrale.
