    The Medium is the Medium was a thirty-minute WGBH-TV program produced by Fred Barzyk, Anne Gresser and Pat Marx; it presented works by Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, Otto Piene, James Seawright, Thomas Tadlock and Aldo Tambellini. The program is described as the first presentation of works by independent video artists aired on television; it was broadcast by WGBH TV in Boston on March 23, 1969.

  • The Vision of Fred Barzyk: The WGBH New Television Workshop 1968 - 1978 Groups

    Fred Barzyk, with co-producer Olivia Tappan, established the WGBH New Television Workshop as an experimental video art laboratory that gave artists access to broadcast television equipment and encouraged unconstrained creative exploration. The Workshop, aided by Ford and Rockefeller funding and collaboration with WNET, hosted Artists-In-Residence including Nam June Paik, Stan Vanderbeek, Peter Campus, Gus Solomons Jr. and Bill Wegman and produced national projects such as The Medium Is The Medium (1969) and Video: The New Wave. A half-inch studio opened in Watertown in 1974 with Rockefeller, the Massachusetts Council for Arts and Humanities and the NEA; the studio later closed, equipment helped found the Boston Film/Video Foundation, and the Workshop ended in Fall 1993.

    In the late 1960s KQED, WNET and WGBH-TV established experimental television labs funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts to give artists access to television. Under WGBH producer Fred Barzyk the New Television Workshop and a Rockefeller Artists-in-Residence project began; the Workshop broadcast Medium is the Medium (1969) and Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe built the first video synthesizer there (1969–70). The Workshop opened a Watertown studio in 1974, donated equipment to the Boston Film/Video Foundation in 1978 and was closed by WGBH in 1993.
