The Video Data Bank presents The Science of Fiction The Fiction of Science On September 7th and 8th, 1984, the VDB produced the first Video Drive-In in Grant Park, Chicago.

A 40" video projection transforms the Petrillo Band Shell into a video version of a drive-in theater showcasing two rakishly orchestrated evenings of video tape programs. Including Jackie O., Michael Smith, Max Almay, Branda Miller, Beth Berolzheimer, Arturo Cubacub, Arturo Toscanini, Doug Hall, Judith Barry, John Manning, Ed Rankus, Wayne Fielding, Graeme Whifler, Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, Cecelia Condit, Steina, Janice Tanaka, Ken Feingold, Barbara Buckner, Dan Sandin, Barbara Latham, Daniel Klepper, Bruce Nauman, Bill Viola, Carole Ann Klonarides, Lynn Blumenthal and Ed Paschke, Bob Snyder and Joan Logue.

  • Light and Darkness in the Electronic Landscape: Some Aspects of the Video Image Tools

    Barbara Buckner's lecture, presented at the Collective for Living Cinema in February 1978, analyses the video image's technological and aesthetic properties, describing electron-beam scanning (525 horizontal lines, 30 frames/second, two fields per frame, 1/60th second vertical retrace), tape recording, monitors and sync pulses. She contrasts video and film, discusses video image processors and computer-based video synthesizers (citing Donald E. McArthur, Experimental Television Center, June 1977) and considers implications for storage, automated composition and the artist's role in machine-assisted image-making.

  • Tracking Video Art: Image Processing as a Genre Bibliography

    Lucinda Furlong, Curatorial Assistant in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Film and Video Department, traces the emergence of image processing as a distinct video-art genre from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s; she examines terminology, aesthetic debates, and the modernist and formalist impulses that shaped the work. The text documents early tool-builders and artists (Dan Sandin, Steina and Woody Vasulka, Eric Siegel, Stephen Beck, Bill Etra, Steve Rutt, Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe), key technologies (video synthesizers, Sandin Image Processor, Rutt-Etra, Moog, Z-Grass), institutions (Whitney Museum, Radical Software, Experimental Television Center, SUNY Binghamton, University of Illinois Circle Campus) and funding developments including a $50,000 NYSCA grant to Hocking's Center.

  • Reports to the Field Preservation

    Experimental Television Center convened Looking Back/Looking Forward on May 31–June 1, 2002 at Downtown Community Television Center in New York, bringing over 50 media arts professionals, conservators, technicians and artists to address physical preservation of independent electronic media, related tools and ephemera. Sessions led by BAVC, Artists Television Access, George Eastman House and MoMA examined remastering workflows (including 1/2” open reel), formats, selection strategies, economics, oral histories and web documentation; BAVC received NEA funding to produce a videotape preservation DVD. The Video History Project, launched 2000 and directed by Sherry Miller Hocking with major contribution from Mona Jimenez, maintains resource databases and commissioned papers including Video Preservation: The Basics.
