From the introduction: "The touring exhibition VIDEO/TV: HUMOR/COMEDY was conceived in early 1980 as a means of exploring the recent renaissance of experimental comedy in the visual and performing arts and in the entertainment industry."     Video/TV: Humor/Comedy was a touring video exhibition organized by Media Study/Buffalo, curated by John Minkowsky and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts; a catalog essay by Minkowsky and extensive thematic introductions and artist notes accompanied the exhibition. The program derived from Minkowsky's design of a Video Comedy course for the Center for Media Study in 1981 and for the San Francisco Art Institute in 1982; the exhibition was divided into thematic sections and listed contributing artists for each. Distributors of works in the series included General Idea, Electronic Arts Intermix, Art Metropole and Castelli-Sonnabend Tapes and Films.

  • John Minkowsky People

    John Minkowsky studied literature and media at the State University of New York at Buffalo and in 1977 became Video and Electronic Arts Curator and Music Programmer at Media Study/Buffalo; he taught at Visual Studies Workshop, the Center for Media Study, and the San Francisco Art Institute. His writing appeared in Afterimage, Video 81, and Ear Magazine; he served on advisory panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Ohio Arts Council and received recognition for his critical writing from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. He programmed exhibitions and series that traveled to major cultural centers worldwide, including The Moving Image Statewide and Video/TV: Humor/Comedy The Electronic Arts.

  • John Knecht People

    Professor of Film and Video in the Department of Art and Art History at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York; programmer for the Alternative Cinema series at Colgate and curator of MOTION at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute in Utica. Experimental film and video artist active since 1973 with screenings at international festivals including Viper Festival (Basel), European Media Arts Festival (Osnabruck), Dallas Video Festival and World Wide Video Festival (the Haag). Has received awards including the Judges Award at Black Maria Festival and Juror's Citation at the American Film Institute Video Festival; exhibits and single-channel tapes and 16mm films are available from the artist and New York Filmmaker's Coop. Ten video installations were constructed between 1984 and 2000.
