Walid Raad

Walid Raad is a media producer and an assistant professor of media and cultural studies at Queens College, City University of New York. Ra'ad holds a PhD in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester.

His video and photography works have been exhibited widely in the US, Western Europe and the Middle East. His recent video works include The Dead Weight of a Quarrel Hangs (1998, NTSC, 18:00) and he recently co-edited with Deborah Root a special issue of the journal Public, titled Entangles Territories: Imaging the Orient.

    Plenary address to the Society for Cinema Studies, Chicago, March 9, 2000; delivered by a film educator with two decades in a four-year undergraduate production program.     Sara Hornbacher, Guest Editor, frames eleven articles and reviews and includes Barbara Londons Selected Chronology covering 196393 to outline the brief history of video art. Contributors examine technological and institutional change, including Benjamin Buchloh on developments since the mid-1960s; Katherine Dieckmann on Electra at the Mus6e d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1984); Lucinda Furlong on image-processed video and Nam June Paik and the marketing of portable video equipment by SONY/Japan; and the rise of media centers funded by state and federal agencies and university programs. Hornbacher is a visual artist, curator and artist-in-residence at The Experimental Television Center, Owego, New York, since 1976.

  • Reflecting on the Future of Video Bibliography

    Tom Sherman (Department of Art Media Studies, Syracuse University) contributes a 1991 essay, commissioned by Montreal curator Rene Baert, surveying video as technology, art and environment and tracing formats from 1/2" reel-to-reel and 2" broadcast gear through 3/4", Betacam, consumer VCRs/camcorders and 8mm to desktop digital video, video-computers and chip cameras. He analyses roles of engineers, artists and institutions, funding via government grants and equipment manufacturers, distribution, exhibition and archival decay; and he predicts fragmented home audiences with growing elderly demand, interactive digital indexing and increased commercial exploitation alongside persistent access constraints for artists.

  • Hank Linhart People

    Hank Linhart is a video documentarian and chairs Media Arts at Pratt Institute; he is a former Brooklyn waterfront activist and producer of video documentaries and video art. He holds a B.A. (Roanoke College), a B.F.A. (SUNY Fredonia) and an M.A.H. (SUNY Buffalo). He received NYSCA Grants (1985, 1990) and New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships (1983, 1989); his work was exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Kitchen, The American Center in Paris and on PBS; he was artist in residence at the Experimental Television Center.

    Video on the Air (Department of Video, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; 1986) is a series of visiting artists, producers and curators held in conjunction with the Graduate Video Seminar taught by Beth Berolzheimer. Participants included Lois Bianchi (WNET); Rii Kanzaki (video artist; electronic image processing); Doug Hall (video artist; recent work Storm and Stress links the spectacle of nature with that of technology); Kathy Huffman (curator/producer, CAT Fund, Boston); and Juan Downey (whose videotape series The Thinking Eye investigates Western Art History and culture through autobiography and montage).
