Andrew Berends is a documentary filmmaker and photographer. Berends spent six months working unembedded in Iraq to create two independent documentary films: The Blood of My Brother and When Adnan Comes Home. The Blood of My Brother had its world premiere at IDFA and its North American premiere at Tribeca International Film Festival. Berends' previous documentary film Urk was an International Documentary Association - Pare Lorentz Award nominee and screened in competition at the Cinéma Du Réel International Documentary Film Festival in Paris. In addition, Berends' recent photography work includes projects in Haiti dealing with sexual violence toward girls and in Brazil ranging from the slums of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro to the timeless fishing techniques still practiced in remote villages in Bahia. In New York, he has worked to document the conditions of underprivileged Brooklyn youth in housing projects and on public assistance. Andrew Berebds received a Finishing Funds 2006 award from the Experimental Television Center.
