    Women's Video Festival was presented at The Kitchen September 28-October 14, 1976; it was co-sponsored by Women's Interart Center and the festival coordinators were Susan Milano, Shridar Bapat and Patti Hazan, with Kitchen directors Shridar Bapat, Jim Burton and Bob Stearns. The program listed participants and contributors including Jane Aaron, Shigeko Kubota, Mary Lucier, Steina Vasulka, Lesbians Organized for Video Experience and Santa Cruz Women's Media Collective; a catalog was produced.

    Introduction to the Women's Video Festival situates the festival as a response to women's underrepresentation in media and to social changes from the late 1960s; it describes the arrival of portable half-inch videotape (Sony portapak, 1967) that lowered costs and enabled immediate playback. The Kitchen (begun 1971) and Steina Vasulka's 1972 call for work led to a six-evening open-entry show organized with Shridhar Bapat and Laura Kassos. The festival received New York State Council on the Arts funding via Electronic Arts Intermix in 1973, moved production to the Women's Interart Center in 1974/75 with NEA support, has used juried selection since 1974/75, and solicits work across the U.S. and Canada.

    First Women's Video Festival was presented at The Kitchen at Mercer Arts Center in New York City and organized by Susan Milano. The program included video works by Jackie Cassen, Maxi Cohen, Yoko Maruyama, Susan Milano, Queer Blue Light Video, Keiko Tsuno, Steina and Woody Vasulka, and Women's Video Collective; and featured dance and performance by Judith Scott and Elsa Tambellini.

  • Women's Interart Center Chronology

    Women's Interart Center, New York, was founded; Margot Lewitin served as director and video directors included Carolyn Kresky, Jenny Goldberg, Susan Milano, Ann Volkes, Wendy Clarke and Veronica Geist. The organization aimed to create interdisciplinary collaboration among writers, visual artists, performance artists and video artists.
